Monster Utah Browns - RapalaUt - 05-23-2011

I'm on a quest to catch a monster Utah Brown Trout-10lbs plus on open public water. I've got a few big private water fish and while fun to catch they don't offer the satisfaction of a public water toad. I need help from someone that knows how to get it done. I live in heber city so deer creek and jordanelle both offer some monster browns but catching one of them is the trick. My largest brown so far came outta the middle Provo and measured 26", but was thin and aged. Proly a 6-8 pounder. It took a streamer. Any advice or point in the right direction would be appreciated. I can throw rapalas and streamers, jig, jerk baits, use minnows, swim baits, etc, just need to get dialed in on putting it all together. Thanks!

Rockport has some big browns. I C&R an 8lb. one two years ago right at the corner of the dam. Try a black Jig.[Wink]

Jordanelle, starvation, deer creek, east canyon, echo, and rockport are just a few if the lakes That hold the fish you are looking for, as well as the weber river [Wink] I am looking for the same fish. . And have caught a few close to 30 in and seen some that were bigger. .. fish spring and fall and put Your time in!!! Throw 4-7 inch jerkbaits, swimbaits, and plastics, ))!

hark back to the 70's and 80's. Troll at night with large Rapala's. Back then the color of choice was Rainbow Trout. Husky 13's , if you can find em, in Rainbow, Perch, Crawdad, etc would be the bet. Another refinement would be to use a planner board to put the bait just off shore while the boat is in deeper water. My best bet would be Deer Creek or Flaming Gorge. Jordanelle could also be a good one.

I was reading in an Orvis flyfishing book a few weeks ago and it talked about the browns being more active at night. I never knew that....might help.

Welcome to the site RapalaUt. Another suggestion for monster Browns would be Causey. We don't get many reports of browns being caught there but I know from experience they are there.

Thanks for the replys. I night fish a bit and do OK, but haven't really caught anything bigger than during the day. I have caught a few walleye on the fly rod at night which is cool.

Between jordanelle and deer creek it sounds like jordanelle is my best bet. I caught a few decent ones up in cache valley over the years, but the 10 pounder eludes me...

I hooked one on the beaverhead a few years ago that might have been there, but those Montana fish are crazy.

I released a 8.5 lb and a 9.5 lb caught at starvation res. last year. Starvation is my favorite brown water. I know there are some huge browns in there. Trolling dragging large rapalas and frog flatfish. Early morning and dusk are best. Good luck in your quest.

Fish at night and remember big fish like big meals.

I'm of the opinion that Browns come shallow at night and hit the deeper water during the day. I could be completely wrong. My daughter caught this nice 24" at Vernon reservoir about a month back. Just used a worm under a bobber a few feet off shore near the river inlet.

The advice given has been good. If I was after a 10lb'r I would fish the Weber with Rapalas.

I have caught 2 of them on rivers... one on the Weber. Seen more.
