shrimp works pretty good as bate but does squid work just as well? ive never tried...

Both work very well in salt water. Squid stays on the hook a lot better. I'd assume both would work in fresh if that's what you're doing.

I have caught a few catfish on squid and even a white bass just screwing around, but shrimp has worked well consistently for me.

Both work well on catfish. But really a strip bait consisting of carp or white bass is just as good if not better. And it has a secondary benefit of being MUCH cheaper.
