Giant brown snails from moms back yard. Catfish love em!! - walleyebob - 06-24-2011 So my mother was telling me about these big brown snails she wants to eradicate around her house. I asked her what she does with them. " I break them in the road" was her reply. I thought "hmmm, catfish bait"? So she brought me seven that she caught last night. I headed out to Utah lake this morning, motored to a nice spot and cracked open a giant snail. They thread on a hook good and stay put! I barely got my rod set down and the bobber was down. First of many giant snail catfish. I brought home eight nice three pound cats and released a grundle of bigger ones, plus a few Crappie, one mudder and some gills. Now mother has a place to take all of her giant snails, and I have a new source for cheap bait. Win Win!! [signature] Re: [walleyebob] Giant brown snails from moms back yard. Catfish love em!! - Springbuck - 06-24-2011 AWESOME!! You know, I had been wondering about this off and on for years. I had the same idea, but never followed through. Now, are these different from the normal snails I find in almost every yard in UT? For a big cat you'd need two or three of those per hook. [signature] Re: [walleyebob] Giant brown snails from moms back yard. Catfish love em!! - doggonefishin - 06-24-2011 Way back in the day, when I used to regularly use bait in large rivers, I found that nice brown trout love shelled snails as well. I probably killed 20 of them the other night, never really thought of using them for bait. Now I'll definitely have to try some! Re: [walleyebob] Giant brown snails from moms back yard. Catfish love em!! - walleyebob - 06-25-2011 No, but as big as them things are, I might try cooking some up for me. I have tons of garlic growing in my yard. When we used to fish the ocean sea snails were some of the best bait so makes sense. Thanks again [signature] Re: [TheCarDoctor] Giant brown snails from moms back yard. Catfish love em!! - Roghet - 06-25-2011 I have plenty to share. I while ago my son and I had a fun adventure when we discovered we had a teeny snail problem. It should be noted, that this bucket is quite full. And, in deciding what to do about them, it ended up as a proposal for a new Olympic Sport. Throw out the high score and the low score and he still gets a perfect 10.00 By the way, that would make a great chum bag. [signature] Re: [Roghet] Giant brown snails from moms back yard. Catfish love em!! - CoyoteSpinner - 06-26-2011 [center][:p][:p][:p][:p] That's completely wicked! [cool][cool][cool][cool] [/center] Wicked fun that is. Gotta show THAT to MY boy!!! Maybe if we line 'em up on a board - give him something "living" his mom'll LET him shoot at with his BBs In baiting the hook - do you take them out of the shell, or crack it, or not even. I've left shrimp skins on, though they tend to open up on their own, plus they're hinged anyway. Have filleted perch from a nearby lake and had their stomachs explode with loads of teeny snails. No reason to think bigger mollusks wouldn't share the appeal to various fishes, probably right along with snarfing up crawdads. Good forage. Maybe for BIG BIG cats you need one of them Banana slugs like they have out in the Pacific NW. The kind Ron was puking up after his spell backfired. [ ![]() I would have to imagine you'd have to break 'em out of their shells. Funny, that's got to be raising the bar for those that hate threading a worm on a hook. [:p] I got to try snails since I have so many in the yard. So thanks for the suggestion [url "../../../cgi-bin/community/community.cgi?do=user_page;pg=user_profile_view.html;username=walleyebob"]walleyebob[/url]! [signature] Re: [walleyebob] Giant brown snails from moms back yard. Catfish love em!! - catfish-logic - 06-26-2011 I have thought about using snails lots of times. But most of them are in Salt Lake around apartments and older homes. And I lived in Utah Valley and never found them in yards except in American Fork. My sisters friend caught this big huge slug, it was huge! It was about 3 inches long. It was in American Fork. Her friend took it to school for show and tell. Its no surprise that cats would love them, slugs or snails. On the other hand I happen to think snails are cute! And I'm serious. I could not kill a snail just for the fun of it. But I would kill one for catfish bait.[ ![]() I know that doesn't make any sense, but neither does the fact that women can't stand mice....but they certainly won't run over a squirrel. And they are both rodents.[:p] [signature] Re: [catfish-logic] Giant brown snails from moms back yard. Catfish love em!! - walleyebob - 06-27-2011 Well my mom's house is in Spanish Fork and I know giant snails have been in Springville fo at least fifteen years. Maybe they are everywhere now. Don't know where they came from. Probably Asia or Arkansas. Some far off strange land. [signature] Re: [walleyebob] Giant brown snails from moms back yard. Catfish love em!! - catfish-logic - 06-27-2011 Yeah when I was a 5th grader I went up American Fork canyon on a field trip. I found snails there. So I figure they are from Utah unless there is a species from some other place. And I think they are not native to I looked them up in the encyclopedia way long ago, and I think they are called a Land Snail. [signature] Re: [walleyebob] Giant brown snails from moms back yard. Catfish love em!! - ChubbyChaser - 06-30-2011 My father in law in South Jordan has tons of the little snot-rockets all over his yard, I've never thought of using them for bait, but he'd be happy to lose a few as they wreak havoc on his marigolds. Did you fish them on the bottom when you went out? think Ill give it a whirl- thanks for the tip! [signature] |
