Observations on Newton - fishnate - 09-17-2003

Went out to Newton today to check out the fish kill that was reported last week. Not sure how to interpret what I saw just yet. It wasn't good but I don't think it was ALL bad either. I saw hundreds of dead fish for sure. All the daed fish I saw were perch, bluegill and bass, aside from one monster channel cat (about 24"+). Now these were small to middle sized fish for this lake. Perch from 4-10", bluegill from 3-8", and LM bass from 4-16". It's early yet, but I was happy not to see any dead crappie, or the bigger bluegill and bass. I didn't see any dead musky either. As it appears right now, the biggest and the smallest may be surviving. The birds are have a field day in this shallow water. I figure that if the oxygen deficit doesn't get the fish this winter, then the fish population in the lake will be in relatively good shape next spring. It snowed and rained pretty good today in Cache Valley, BRING IT ON!

Re: [fishnate] Observations on Newton - Theekillerbee - 09-17-2003

Thanks for the report on Newton. I've personally never fished it, but I have been tempted. If they can survive the low water this winter, I think the fishery will benefit from the small/medium sized fish kill.
