Uinta Adventure Time with Scoob and Krypto - wagdog - 09-19-2011 My kids love to catch fish. They don't love to fish. They love to catch fish. I haven't fished a lot lately and if I have, it has only been for an hour or two and I'll go by myself. My boys told me, "Daddy, I really want to catch a fish out of a river." If I'm going to be a good parent, I need to see what I can do to make that wish happen. [] I got some tips on places to try from fellow BFT'er LOAH (thanks man!) and decided to brave the rain and head up to the Uintas on Saturday. The traffic wasn't bad and there weren't many people up there. I guess everyone was getting ready to watch BYU make turnovers (I'm still sobbing softly and I hope any fumbled footballs in future games results in laps around the stadium until they all puke). We started just below the Provo River Falls and I tied on a small vibrax spinner for the kiddos to use. Kryptonian* and the Scoob* were eager to see SOMETHING come out of this tiny bit of water and it did NOT disappoint. It was a snagfest for a while but Krypto was able to pull in a brookie. His little bro Scoob was not happy. He wanted to catch something too. I changed up the rig a little bit to make it easier on Scoob and went uber-simple: small hook, chunk o' crawler, tiny split shot, and a small bobber. Drift, drift, fish on! Scoob sets the hook and I see something bigger than the brookies we had been pulling in. I see the fish get off and before I can say, "let's get that back out there", the fish hits again, Scoob sets, and pulls in a nice tiger trout! Tiger? Up here? Sweet. We pause for a few photos. Big bro Krypto holds all the fish because the Scoob is gun-shy. No big deal. Fish is back in the water. I ask Scoob if he wants another turn. "No Daddy. I've caught the biggest fish of the day. I'm going to look for rocks." Well we continued to catch fish and I even took a turn or three. Just about any hole produced fish with that same simple rig. We caught #whitefish# correction: grayling (thanks rockroller!), more brookies (and more...and more), and a brown showed up but didn't stick around for the photos. We hiked around for fun and really enjoyed the day. It was kinda chilly up there but the clouds just threatened to rain, they didn't follow through. I kept laughing everytime we would move downstream or upstream because one of my kids would yell, "What time is it?" and the other would say, "Adventure Time!" Too many cartoons for this bunch I guess. The Scoob was right though. His fish WAS the biggest of the day. Dang kids... * names have been changed to protect the Goofy [signature] Re: [wagdog] Uinta Adventure Time with Scoob and Krypto - rockroller - 09-19-2011 Sounds like a great day had by all. Question for you, though. You certainly had the better look at that "whitie" and its dorsal fin. And granted, the picture is from a bad angle to tell.... BUT from that spotting pattern--are you sure it wasn't a grayling? Black slashes under the chin? Out of the water, the brilliant colors fade. From my bad angle, it looks like a grayling. Which might be even cooler for the kids to know if they've never caught one before. [signature] Re: [rockroller] Uinta Adventure Time with Scoob and Krypto - wagdog - 09-19-2011 WOW. I had another pic that I didn't post. I think you are right! It did have those black slashes but not the brilliant colors. I just assumed (we all know what happens when wag assumes) that it was a whitefish. Thanks for the correction! That whitefish actually looks like a respectable grayling based upon the spots on the side and the big dorsal fin. Great catch for the Upper Provo! Like I said, I have another pic that isn't as good of quality but is a better shot and that is definitely a grayling. I should have realized that when the mouth wasn't tiny and turned-down like a whitefish. I didn't realize that grayling were in that section nor did I realize that they weren't as colorful when out of the water. It was a ton of fun to fish with my kids again. Last night the youngest asked me when ice fishing started. He can't wait and neither can I! [signature] Re: [wagdog] Uinta Adventure Time with Scoob and Krypto - LOAH - 09-20-2011 Awesome! I'm happy that your trip turned out to be a success. 3 species too! What a bonus. That area is gorgeous in the rain. Watching steam rise from the river is amazing.
