Roe Roe Roe your bait - CoyoteSpinner - 11-13-2011 Decided to try my hand at something new - curing Roe, which of course led me to - buying more stuff, so I could rig up bait sacks. Yep another mysterious "box" showing up on the doorstep! The curing was pretty simple - much like a smokin' brine. Sugar, Salt - I added some cherry gelatin for more color, sweetness. (order included some commercial 'cure' - next time). After - I tossed the cured eggs in jars with Borax. But I tried a lil' trout caviar first (BB:Before Borax) - salty, sweet, pops in your mouth. Just need crackers, good cheese, and a nice bottle of wine/champagne! Figured I could twist up mesh sacks, but the 'tool' was pretty cheap, and thought it'd do a cleaner job, plus I can use it for other bait-sack offerings. Just a little scoop, synch it down, and the 'magic thread' - has elastic properties - so you wrap, wrap, wrap, then tighten, and repeat. Slick. The 'kit' includes some bright foam floats for rigging up. Need to practice up my "egg loop" knot and find a nice spawing river to float. It'll be game on! These little sacks just spew scent! My uncle use to make his own roe bags from the first salmon caught.. I remember him making them and the set up was the same.. I wish i had paid more attention to what he was doing rater than tring to find a kegger.. [angelic]R.I.P Uncle Bob P.S Thanks for the memory [signature] Re: [CoyoteSpinner] Roe Roe Roe your bait - jdawg183 - 11-14-2011 Those look pretty cool man! I hope they work out for you. I cant believe you actually put one of those things in your mouth though, yuck! Re: [CoyoteSpinner] Roe Roe Roe your bait - sinergy - 11-14-2011 Nice setup, never seen a stand like that I just buy the precut squares and fold the corners together. But that setup looks allot more convenient. Oh FYI: That roe mesh works great for anchovies \ bait fish and chicken livers too [] [signature] Re: [sinergy] Roe Roe Roe your bait - CoyoteSpinner - 11-15-2011 Ha - finally got moved. Figured it was just a matter of time! Synches down on the bundle. Plus with the spool of mesh, and holder for the magic string - easy to do different sized bags. Had thought of trying some baitfish mush, or chickenlivers too - see if my kitties wanna play! I know folks use nylons for livers. Just not my favorite bait (shrimp are much more pleasant to handle)! Re: [CoyoteSpinner] Roe Roe Roe your bait - BearLakeFishGuy - 11-15-2011 That is the same "spawn sac" machine that I used while growing up in Michigan. Mine has tied thousands of spawn sacs. Its is was easier and neater than the little mesh squares that someone else mentioned. We always cured our own roe with salt, sugar and water. The eggs would become so hard it was difficult to pop them between your fingers and they lasted a long time in the water. We would keep them in baby food jars in the fridge and they would last for months. Good to see something that brought back great memories.
