Re: [Crappie_Stinger] Mantua - Kevin_VanDam - 12-25-2011

The tent city over on the southeast side is a good place to start. I went yesterday from 1-4 and kept 18 gill, 2 perch, and a bass. The fish were holding within a foot of the bottom, any higher and all you'd catch would be trout. Bluegills have tiny mouths so you want to go small when targeting them. My go to jig is small green-glow ratfinkee tipped with a maggot. The bite was super lite so some type of spring bobber is a must (unless you use an ultra light rod like mine that is already sensitive). Don't use line heavier than 2lb either or you'll spook the fish. I also like to use a small split shot a few inches above my jig to help it get to the bottom faster. After hitting the bottom just reel it up an inch or two and then the rod still to look for bites. If you don't get any bites after 10 seconds give it a little jig and then hold still again. Hope you have better luck next time, targeting panfish is a whole different animal compared to targeting trout.

As suggested - fish shallower. 4-10 ft, the trout will take a lot of the same jigs, baits as the panfish, but you could try something shiny - castmasters, spoons, silver/gold. The trout are filling their bellies with baby perch mostly, gills too. So imitators with vertical stripes.

Pink is a hot color for trout. I've got em on both horizontal and vertical presentations. White, chartreuse (green), pink. Check into Maniac plastics. Gizzy bugs are a good choice. Maniac has some nice small jigheads too.

The trout are not as finicky as the panfish, but they can have a light or quick bite. Can be easily missed.

If you aren't getting bites - you either ARE and don't realize (spring bobbers, Mr Jiggers) or it's time to MOVE. Unless I hear better reports on Newton, or Hyrum's iced up good - I'll be out to Mantua New Years Day. If anyone wants to meet up - shout out.

Waxworms, Mealworms, or Crawlers will get 'em, but I think Waxies work best.

Just sent you a PM Coyote, I was hoping to get out to Mantua myself on Sunday. Got that new auger to try out Smile

Thanks for the tips from everyone on the auger, I went with the Mora and ended up getting it for $40 at Cal Ranch (they had 20% off fishing stuff).
