Southern California Saltwater Report 10/2-8 - JapanRon - 10-03-2003 Southern California Saltwater Report for October 2, 2003 (Thursday) This starts a new week of reports for the local saltwater scene in southern California. Way Up North- Avila and Monterey 18 salmon caught at Virg's today with the usual rockfish. Up North- Channel Islands A fair count on the yellowtail, usual good red rockfish, white fish and ling fishing. LA Area- Catalina Island Water still cold and dirty. Scratching on the Calicos and some SWR counts. Further South- San Clemente No reliable information but the charts say it cold and a downhill current. San Diego- Local and Offshore Still a pretty good bonito bite along with the usual rockfish locally with the multi-day trips doing OK on the ablies and skippies. LA Local Lings, Red Snapper, Sculpin and various rockfish are doing pretty good. Bass are biting on the South Coast. Up North- Channel Islands CISC and Port Hueneme boats got really good yellowtail counts along with the usual rockfish and white fish. LA Area- Catalina Island Besides the fair calico bite there wasn't much other than yellowtail ha ha I heard that some yellows might have been caught but can't confirm as of 8pm. Further South- San Clemente Whoa! Nice counts of yellowtail at Clemente for a change. 28 for 1 landing and I suspect about 40 for another! You just don't hear much about San Clemente San Diego- Local and Offshore Local was worse than the LA area for most boats. As usual, some 1/2 and 3/4's do well day in and day out but generally NOT! LA Local Like Sculpin, Red Snapper, White fish? That's about what you've got. Highlight would be catching a Ling or getting in on the barracuda flurry on the South Coast. LA Area- Catalina Island Calicos are coming back with more yellows showing. Rumors of a few WSB too. Further South- San Clemente Some yellows on the backside with more boats making the trip. San Diego- Local and Offshore Local fishing perked up a bit with plenty of bass, sculpin and other SWR. The bonito are showing more and more too. LA Local Scupin, Ling, Red Snapper, Whitefish being caught. Barracuda, both species of bass also being caught on the South Coast. Up North- Channel Island Rockfish, Red Snapper, Whitefish and a few scattered yellows were in the count along with a few albies. LA Area- Catalina Island Water clearing and temps are going up but there are still few boats making the crossing. Further South- San Clemente Reports from the PB's indicate there are signs of yellows and a lot of hope. I'm sure some of the charter boats on the South Coast make the trip but little info that I get. San Diego- Local and Offshore Bonito are showing up big time in the counts to make an otherwise slow local bite interesting. Offshore is doing its usual albie, BFT, YFT, skipjack, and Yellowtail catch. LA Local Red Snapper, Rockfish, Ling Cod, Whitefish and BONITO are showing up. Bonito are on the South Coast! Hope they visit the LA Harbor area in large numbers. JapanRon [signature] Re: [JapanRon] Southern California Saltwater Report 10/2-8 - JapanRon - 10-09-2003 Southern California Saltwater Report for October 8, 2003 (Wednesday) YELLOWS YELLOWS YELLOWS on the South Coast!!!!!! Generally slow with rockfish, sculpin and other bottom dewellers the main fare in the northern area with Newport to San Diego boats doing well on . Way Up North- Avila and Monterey Weather really rough but a few boats got out to get rockfish. Up North- Channel Islands The Seahawk got over 10 albies per angler while other boats caught the usual rockfish. LA Area- Catalina Island Nothing of note to report. Further South- San Clemente With little info, nothing special to report. San Diego- Local and Offshore Local fishing features lots of bonito. Offshore fishing good to fantastic with limits of yellows and lots of other species. LA Local Santa Monica Bay fishing still into the rockfish thing while LA is hitting the depths for a variety of species especially sculpin and reds. The South Coast boats are doing great with yellows as we seem to be experiencing a flurry on 5 to 10 pound fish and bass, whitefish, etc. Newport, Davey's and Dana's doing compartively goooooooooood for the season and conditions here of late.
