New Guy - Phission - 01-31-2012

Hello fellow fisher-people! I am new to BFT and also my first year at ice fishing. First trip was Henry's lake on Dec. 1st. Managed to land 14...a good day I guess. Was wondering if anyone knows the thickness of ice on PaliSades and Island Park? I am a one man power auger and really don't like powering through more than about 12 inches of ice. Thanks in advance for any assist!

I don't know anything about ice conditions at those places mentioned, sorry. But I can give you a hearty welcome to the forum! Hope you enjoy it here.[Smile]

Henry's is a cool place to ice fish, is it not?

Welcome Aboard . Last week Island Park had 20" of ice . Last report on PalaSades 12" at Big Elk 10" at Blowout . I have not heard of safe ice by the dam , but I sure would like to . Curt G.

Thanks for the info. Am wondering though how to test the ice for thickness. Like if I want check the area at the PaliSades dam, does one venture out and start poking holes further and further out? Does the ice thin out gradually or does it go suddenly from 12" to ice bath?

So far I have only fished where I see others have already been. figured that was safe until I get all figured out.

welcome aboard. I test ice with a spud but i have seen several people just use there auger and drill test holes as they progress out. I like the spud or ice chisel because you can clean out others holes in a mater of seconds versing drilling new holes all the time so i always carry it. Here is a place that tells you a lot about ice and how to read it
