Runners for Ice Sleds - Worth It? - rgreenland - 02-09-2012

For many of the popular brand ice huts w/ sled the manufacturer offers "Runners" that you can put on the bottom of your sled to make it easier to pull.
Does anyone have any experienc with these? Do they really work and do they really make a difference?
Thanks

I've seen people fight the runners, I would suggest waxing the bottom of your sled or hard tent bottom, like they do with skis or snowboards. It's quick, easy, cheap, and works.

[#800000]I can't speak for other brands, but I have a Clam Yukon and the runner kit is not advertised as an accessory to make the sled pull easier. It's for protection only. Here is a quote from the Clam website about the runner kit: "Fish Trap Runner Kits are designed to increase the life of your sled by protecting the bottom from the rigors of pulling the sled across the ice. Suggested for anyone pulling a Fish Trap across the ice with an ATV or snowmobile." I have the kit on my Yukon because I use both a quad and snowmobile to pull it around on asphalt and ice. To me its worth every penny.[/#800000]

Yup. Protection for the bottom. One of my buddies had to sell his little 12 foot fiberglass boat because we wore the bottom out loading and unloading it.Any thing dragged across ice will wear out sooner or later. Runners can be easily replaced.
