My new toy :) - fish_or_die - 02-14-2012 Hey guys, just picked up a 1548 tracker mod v with a 40hp nissan outboard....for $1500! I feel like a kid on christmas morning! Engine fired right up once we'd tinkered with it, it's a '96 two stroke with a four blade prop. Now, the boat's only rated for a 25hp engine but I'm excited to see what excessive horsepower does to a very light boat, what do you guys think? Any estimates of how fast this rig would run/should run? It's a deep hull (16" transom) so I hope this setup works alright. Do you think it will still troll slow enough? Can't wait to get out and start stickin some carp![inline image952.jpg][inline image-1.jpg][inline image.jpg] [signature] Re: [fish_or_die] My new toy :) - BearLakeFishGuy - 02-14-2012 It will probably run great, but if you plan to insure it, you should tell the insurance you only have a 25hp. Its hard to get insurance for boats that are over-horsepowered. I speak from experience. [signature] Re: [BearLakeFishGuy] My new toy :) - fish_or_die - 02-14-2012 why do they have hp "limitations" on boats anyway? Is it a weight issue or can the transom actually not handle the thrust? I'm sure they give it a 2x safety factor any way, most things are over-engineered so the designer covers his butt [signature] Re: [fish_or_die] My new toy :) - RILEYFISH - 02-15-2012 It's called airing on the side of safety. I would really check your transom over for fatigue stress fractures. Is there a transom saver on your motor? The bouncing of the weight back there over time will fatigue your transom and could be an issue. BLFG is correct. I would make sure your within your boats peramiters for insurance purposes. Should be a fun little duck hunting machine. [signature] Re: [fish_or_die] My new toy :) - Erawk - 02-15-2012 Congrats on a good deal. This is a 12' but you might have similar results. I saw this video a while back and your post reminded me of it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CJ7dgWW6KRs I'd say upgrade your boat or downsize your motor. I'd probably still try it though, lol. [signature] Re: [fish_or_die] My new toy :) - PACKFAN - 02-15-2012 I've been told in the past that you could be cited for putting a bigger motor on your boat than what the HP rating for the boat is, not sure how true this is. [unimpressed] [signature] Re: [Erawk] My new toy :) - fish_or_die - 02-15-2012 yeah, 40hp on an 1136 is absolutely overkill but this is a much bigger boat. Still lots of engine but I figure I'll give it a try and if it porpoises too much or won't troll slow enough I'll sell it for close to what I bought the whole rig for and find a 25hp off KSL. I've been dreaming of flying across willard at 38mph though.... This spring another project is a buddy and I are designing a dual-gear mud motor comparable to mud buddy's Super Long Tail, using a 23hp vanguard motor. Come October I should be in a good place to get out to the duckies like never before and take some people with me. [signature] Re: [BearLakeFishGuy] My new toy :) - fish_or_die - 02-15-2012 think it'll troll down to 2mph? [signature] Re: [fish_or_die] My new toy :) - CROSSINEYES - 02-15-2012 if it wont idle down slow just toss a 5 gal bucket on a rope. [signature] Re: [fish_or_die] My new toy :) - Gorgefanatic - 02-16-2012 it will definatly if you put a trolling plate on it. I had a 50 hp on my old 16 ft crestliner and it would barely move with the trolling plate. [signature] Re: [Gorgefanatic] My new toy :) - fish_or_die - 02-16-2012 its got a stabilizer fin on it now, I hope that helps with porpoising but unless I take that off a trolling plate is out. Definitely need to pick up a transom saver though, very heavy engine [signature] Re: [fish_or_die] My new toy :) - submoa - 02-16-2012 Nice buy! [signature] Re: [fish_or_die] My new toy :) - Theekillerbee - 02-17-2012 Nice find. What others have said is spot on. You can get a ticket if the man is checking your ID plate...actually had a boat checked once for this. Let us know how she performs when you get to really play with it! [signature] Re: [Theekillerbee] My new toy :) - fish_or_die - 02-17-2012 wow, talk about over-regulation from the government! They just have to get their hand into every sector of private life! I'm excited to get it out though! next job is to check the water pump and then test it on the water. Then on to a bit of custom seating/deck installation. I have a feeling I'm going to spend a lot of time in this boat this year... [signature] Re: [fishinfool] My new toy :) - fish_or_die - 02-21-2012 We found out once we got it home that the tranny shares a housing with the motor, so there's no way to get a 1:1 output off of it, which is what we need. We decided we may as well just go for a standard motor so we don't have to redesign parts on the frame to accept different motors. We're hoping to have a couple prototypes built by this fall, can't wait till school is out so I have time to work on it! [signature] Re: [fish_or_die] My new toy :) - fishinfool - 02-25-2012 I see, wouldn't it be close to that in third gear? any way can't wait to see it perform it should be assume the way you told me you were going to set it up.
