Never have used them...but then again I've only gone ice fishing once, and I didn't know what I was doing. Haven't even considered using them for anything else.

I used them ice fishing when I couldn't get any mealies. They worked great, but were a little soft bodied, so they were a bit fragile on the hook. I have seen them work well though, just never any better than mealworms.

I'm a big fan of Waxies when tipping ice flies and jigs. I've also heard they work well tipping Koke lures throughout the year.

I use them blue gill fishing all the time. I catch some real bull gills on Pelican and Blue lakes all the time. Some just under state record by ounces!

I have had success using their cousin meal worms year around. What I like about them is that one can keep them for months. I still have some in my fridge that I used ice fishing. A tip for puchasing them -- don't purchase them at your local tackle shop. Purchase them from a pet supply store. They are fresher and cost less from a pet supply store.

Since you can't use corn (legal in most western states) for tipping your lures for Kokanee fishing at the Gorge - I have used both meal & wax worms - The meal worms had better results for the kokanee. And Kent is right - I buy mine at Petco they have various sizes and a good variety of crawly things...

I used wax worms a couple years ago and they did good some places but I didn't like putting one on after every bite. I'd stick will mealworms.
If you a serious ice fishermen buy by the bulk. You can get 75 mealworms for about 3 dollars from the local pet store. I buy a thousand mealworms from Rainbow mealworms every year. I usually spend about 9 dollars for the worms and 3 or 4 for the shipping. Even with guarenteed shipping on live worms, I wait til about a week before safe ice. 2 years ago I used up 2 thousand mealworms and then some. This year a thousand will do.

I have never tried mealworms I heard that you have to smash there heads to get the sent out, I will try them this year though. Wax worms is all I have use to ice fish out of two of us we got 70-80 trout in about five hours at lost creek last year that was fun the average one was about 10 in, that day we caught the biggest trout I have seen come out of there there it was 27 in. we were using a water cricket with wax worm. Another way that has works good for me is to use wax worms up on the streams in the winter I always get some good fish on them. On the way back form ice fishing at echo or lost creek I usually stop and fish the Weber you would be amazed at the amount of bites and good fish you will get. It will be nice to get out on the ice again.
