Deer hunting - Fishkid - 10-08-2003
I need some help I have never gone deer hunting here in Utah and I need some help. I am 15 and my parents don't go hunting so they don't want to take me anywhere that isn't private property because they are afraid that there will be too many people or something like that. We are very careful and wouldn't hurt or damage anything if you have some land or if you know someone that has some in the northern region that would let us use it would you write back. Thanks

Uintahs, park at the Provo River Overlook there is a dirt road that is right across the street follow that road to the first meadow its a hike maybe 1/4 to a 1/2 mile at the best it will be a climb the whole time until you get there. There will be a stand of large aspens on your right and the road turns left and continues uphill moderately. As you climb you will notice a rock cliff forming on your left start looking for a trail to the right it will be right after a very very large pine tree that the road bends around. Take that trail and follow it to the top. Find a tree to sit against looking down hill and be patient. Hunter will be in the area but few ever frequent the area. I've hunted this area for 10 years with 6 years in a row getting a nice buck. No monsters, but big enough and not too big to drag out. In the first 4 years I was up there I saw deer but I was either too noisy, impatient, and inexperienced to get a buck. I worked too hard when I relaxed I started seeing lots of deer. 3 years in a row I got shots of 100 feet of less and they never knew I was there until it was too late.
I don't hunt deer anymore because I don't like the draw. Now I go for big bertha and big bubba (elk). If they remove the draw I'd hunt deer again.

You could try up Logan Canyon,there will be enough people up there to have all the deer running for there lives,thats why I go fishing that weekend!!M.H.

Honestly, you're going to have a real tough time finding private land to hunt on for free and without drawing out a special permit. If I were you I would not be too afraid to hunt the public land. It has been a long time since I have heard of a serious accident that wasn't self inflicted. So if you yourself are safe you should be okay. The hunter safety program and the reduction in the number of deer hunters has really cut back on hunting accidents. Most people that get hurt usually get hurt on their own ATVs or get lost or shoot themselves or their buddy. Go with safe friends and you'll be fine. Enjoy and good luck.

Try bowhunting. That's how I started as a kid, and I started when I was 16 and old enough to drive myself. Look for a good bow after this year's season that you can pick up used, and practice all summer. Then next year you'll have a car and be able to hunt the bow hunt.
You also need to find your deer before the season starts. Know his patterns and be there waiting for him on the morning of the first day of the hunt.

DennisW is right. If you want a safe hunt on public land then do the bow hunt. That won't help you for this year but you can have a lot of fun getting ready for next year.

I'd call hunting the Uintahs safe where we hunted we'd be lucky to see anyone on the mountain during a whole weekend. In 10 years I think I met someone else on the mountain 2-3 times and either they were heading up and I was going down or visa versa. Of course it all depends on where you hunt.

one place that i have hunted is up above woods cross. there are usually not to many people because it is very steep and brushy. you could also get bow tag and hunt the wasatch mnts. till dec.

It's not too late to bow hunt. If you are under 18 you can do all three hunts and the extended archery hunt is still going. Problem with Northern Region is the hunt is limited more by land availability than tags. Good success on private land. Everyone else is packed into public areas.
