I'd say it was a good day... - tageater - 04-17-2012 Didn't start out thinking I was going to fish today, but like any good fisherman, the fly rod is always loaded in the car when I leave the house. I was able to get my "chores" done by noon, so I headed up to the river. I started out nymphing, and soon tired of catching whitefish and smaller browns( I did get a couple in the 16" range and one fat 19"er) so I switched over to streamers. The water was about 4" lower than last week, and still pretty clear, so I wasn't too sure of how the streamers would do...it didn't take long for me to find out- I landed 10 on various patterns(losing a few flies along the way, I'd have to change, and rarely do I have more than 1 of each pattern). It didn't seem to matter too much. At one point I was refishing the area that I had nymphed through, and hooked a fat 19"er....it was the same fish I had caught earlier- and he still had my dropper/weights attached to his side(that I hadn't realized were still attached until I released him, and went to re-cast.) I fished til 8:45 and landed close to 40 fish...I'd call that a GOOD DAY! [signature] Re: [tageater] I'd say it was a good day... - SatanLBZ801 - 04-17-2012 I'd say that's a good day. Was this on the Weber somewhere? So when you are using streamers, I have never caught one yet on a streamer, how are you presenting it? Under an indicator letting it dead drift with the current with a drop? Or throwing something fairly heavy and just stripping it throw holes? [signature] Re: [SatanLBZ801] I'd say it was a good day... - tageater - 04-17-2012 Yes-i will dead drift under an indicator, sometimes- I usually start out set up like that, after I switch from nymphing I'll just leave it on until the fish tell me how they are going to react to the fly. I cast upstream, downstream, across- I'll cast to a spot on tha far bank from every angle if I think there's a fish over there.(And in my mind there's ALWAYS a fish over there). As for the streamer itself- you can see in a couple of those pics the brass eyes attched to a pretty light weight streamer. But I also caught fish on flies that had relatively quite a bit more weight. [signature] Re: [tageater] I'd say it was a good day... - Xmlfish - 04-17-2012 That looks like good day to me. that is a sweet looking streamer you got there. what you call that one? [signature] Re: [Xmlfish] I'd say it was a good day... - tageater - 04-17-2012 I've never really got into naming the flies I tie- seems about as pointless as naming a turd. By the time i name it, I lose it on a rock, rootball, or a fish. But just because you asked, and I'm feeling like it IS a decent pattern, and I've tied 4 more this morning, I'll go ahead and name it: Warning: I'm from the kelly galloup school of naming: This pattern(because its so beautiful) will be forever forward known as: Sunrise on your Momma's tits. If it ever makes it into production I'm sure they'll change it [signature] Re: [tageater] I'd say it was a good day... - Dr.Lumber - 04-17-2012 Sounds better than a "good day". I would call it an incredible day. Best name ever by the way. I'll take two. [signature] Re: [tageater] I'd say it was a good day... - Xmlfish - 04-17-2012 I say if you tied it and it is different then anything you have seen and it has caught a fish or two it needs and name. That is a good name! kelly galloup has some of the best names. I am trying to make a pattern that can catch fish so i can give it a good name. but i seem to not catch anything on those patterns. Good job on making a good pattern. [signature] Re: [tageater] I'd say it was a good day... - JLG78 - 04-17-2012 Those are some healthy looking fish! Most of the ones I caught on the web last sunday were kind of skinny. [signature] Re: [tageater] I'd say it was a good day... - tageater - 04-18-2012 thanks for the kind words on the streamer- I had my mind set up for round 2 today- Just when you think you have them ALL FIGURED OUT...not 1 fish landed on the streamers today. Plenty of short hits and a couple of hook ups, but NONE landed. Before you go feeling sorry for me, I still caught close to 30 fish, I happened to have had a bug they REALLY wanted, and the more it got tore up the better- I didn't bother to trim the lose thread, I just let it train behind... A couple of pics of fish caught today. Back to back NICE DAYS! [signature] Re: [tageater] I'd say it was a good day... - Xmlfish - 04-18-2012 Yeah i was thinking about going tonight after work. but i cant miss the hockey games nice fish again. Keep up the battle with the fish. [signature] Re: [Xmlfish] I'd say it was a good day... - tageater - 04-18-2012 I'd miss work before I missed the hockey tonight! Game 4 Pit/Philly--- gonna be abot 5 hours worth of Penalty Minutes handed out! [signature] Re: [tageater] I'd say it was a good day... - flygoddess - 04-18-2012 You have got that river down. 40 and 30 fish days! That is awesome. You out to guide. Seriously. That is way cool. [signature] Re: [flygoddess] I'd say it was a good day... - tageater - 04-18-2012 This last week I was catching 2:1 whitey to trout, but some of the browns were really quite nice. I hate catching/ counting whiteys-they are SOOOO easy to catch- but to tell you I caught 30+ fish, I have to add them in. If I were to guide, it would then become work...and the whole reason I fish is to get away from work...so that aint gonna happen. [signature] Re: [tageater] I'd say it was a good day... - flygoddess - 04-18-2012 good answer. I do understand that. But you have got some interested ears here with the 30/40 days and the browns you post... Lip smacking awesomeness.[laugh] [signature] Re: [flygoddess] I'd say it was a good day... - tageater - 04-19-2012 I don't mind helping "interested ears", that can go out and try a fly or technique I mention, in their favorite water. I'll tell ya a little story: when I first started fishing with my brother from another mother- I'd fish the same holes...with the same flies, set up the same way, before he'd fish them...and he'd catch 3 fish for every 1 I would...its technique, and knowing what a strike looks like on an indicator, and being able to react quickly. Those are all things you can't learn on a website.... Now my buddy catches 1.5 fish for everyone 1 do, but rarely do I get BIG fish when he's fishing...the guy just KNOWS how to fish...I still enjoy learning from watching him fish. If I had the time to take everyone out and show them the basics, I would...but since I don't have that kinda time, I kind of shy away from making any commitment to hands on help. Damn, I hope I don't sound like an ass- [signature] Re: [tageater] I'd say it was a good day... - flygoddess - 04-19-2012 Quite the opposite to me. You are true sportsman. Keep up the good work, I love reading your posts. [signature] |
