Bass on spoons - timberhall - 05-20-2012
Well my son and I fish mantua quite a bit. Every summers we spend lots of time jigging for bluegill in the holes in the weeds. Every once in a while we get a bass on what ever we are using for the bluegill. I relized that I have lots of spoons I never use. I was thinking I could jig them for larger bass while my son still fishes for bluegill. Has any one had luck vertical jigging spoons for bass?

It is a well established technique for covering deep structure and in cold water when the fish are sitting on structure in deep water. In Mantua, I would use a Johnson Silver Minnow, weedless spoon, on Top of the weeds. Using a heavy rod, heavy line, and dragging the spoon over the top, the bass will blow up through the vegetation to get it. Most Bass fisherman use frogs now instead of the Silver Minnow, but it will still catch fish. Most common structure spoons for deep open water are the Hopkins, CC, and similar baits. You are most likely using spoons like Daredevels and Pixies, which are wobble or flash spoons, most commonly used to troll for salmon and trout.
