Odd fish behavior - reservoir_dog - 06-16-2012 Ok, there are many very smart people on here, so I am trying to figure out something I saw on Thursday. I was fishing and in pretty shallow in the trees and brush. Near the shoreline just before it got really shallow I saw a whole bunch of bluegill with their backs out of the water just sitting there. The water was definitely deep enough for them to be completely submerged, but they were not. They were just sitting there stationary. I did not notice any beds directly under or around them, and they were in part sun and part shade. Any ideas why they would behave this way? I have seen carp do this, but I thought it was because they were too shallow for the depth of their bodies. When I got too close they spooked and got a little deeper, anyway I had not seen this with panfish before, still curious though. I think they are not sexually mature yet and not spawning. I believe they hang together in a group mentallity. My guess is they are still in the schools they were born into. I have seen them feeding on the really little midges etc... I have also seen bass crash the schools. Just guesses but I have seen what your describing many times. PS. I have also caught the little guys on small caddis.
