Looking for Rainbow Streams - Poet1971 - 06-23-2012

Can anyone help me find some Rainbow water so my wife and I can fly fish it. We have done our homework, but for some reason we have yet to find good Rainbow water... other than the Provo, we like the smaller streams...

Thanks...[fishin]

Lots of rivers have some. If you want to catch mostly rainbows look at were they have been stocked this year and last. One place that comes to mind is American Fork. They stock them in Tibble Fork Reservoir and to a lesser extent the river itself some years. If you start right where the river dumps into the reservoir and work your way up you'll get predominantly rainbows. If you don't want any browns in the mix just forget sneaking up on the fish. The browns will scatter but anything short of stepping on those hatchery bows and they'll usually bite. I remember semi spooking several only to have them settle in a couple feet next to me this spring. I cast and caught a handful and only about 3 had the common sense to eventually swim away as they watched me.
I caught quite a few on the Upper Provo today. None were big today but I occasionally catch a 20+ inch bow in there. A lot of the south slope of the Uintas streams have them. Yellowstone River seems to be stocked most years. They tend to be thick around that tiny reservoir.
There are some places they occasionally dump bows by the thousands and never list on the stocking report. Wish they would so I'd know when to stay away because it can ruin otherwise great fishing.

I've only encountered one stream in Utah with only rainbows and no other trout. Might be others I've haven't fished. Won't find it on the Utah stocking report but on the Nevada stocking report. Not sure why the fish don't pay attention to state lines. It's no place to fish in summer unless you like rattlesnakes and extreme heat. Imagine all the fish that survive swim up out of Utah for the summer anyway.

Thanks, I will take the info with us as we search out small streams with big fish and different species...

If you want to catch only rainbows, and you are in Northern Utah, check out Farmington Creek. There are lots of smaller rainbows (a 12 incher is a big fish for this stream), but the bows are plentiful and there is easy access to this small creek.

Good Luck!

You can find some great rainbows on the Green. Sorry it's not the "small water" you're probably looking for, but it's a fun place to fish, camp, and get away.

One of my fav spots is spring creek that dumps into the middle Provo in the charlston\ midway stretch. Great water and I'd say it's probably 70% rainbows from what I have caught. Great dry fly action

tk I would love to know more about this spring creek. I have a cabin in midway and fish the provo all the time but would love to try there for some variety.
