hot salmon fishing - Kodiak1 - 07-10-2012

We were in Eureka, Calilf. a couple of days ago, and stopped in a fishing store to see if they had the flasher I have been looking for. They told me the king fishing was so good that everyone was limiting quickly. A fellow shopping there chimed in that he had been out that morning and limited in about 50 feet of water in 20 minutes, with his kings averaging 20 pounds. Also just got a report from Sekiu on the Olympic Peninsula, and they too are limiting in the morning with kings and coho. Yes, coho this early! Kings are running from 15 to 25, with a few in the mid 30's. Truly like the "good ol' days"!
Canada fishing is also off the hook, with kings, coho, and larger than usual halibut. Better get your reservations fast. Mike

Maybe that is where i should have gone. I just got back from Alaska and they closed the entire south east region to king fishing because of low returns. Not even allowed to catch and release. Sounds like i needed to come back to the lower 48 to catch the mighty Chinook.

I used to live about 10 minutes north of Eureka. Grew up salmon and steelhead fishing around there. My friends have been hammering the salmon this year and have been posting all sorts of pictures on facebook to rub it in!one of the better seasons in a while. you stop by englund marine? redwood marine?

Pacific Outfitters, I believe. The fishing gear is upstairs, and lots of kayaks, etc. downstairs. They had brought in 3 cases of the flasher I bought, which was the hot one there too, and I got the last one! So don't tell me that enhanced fishing doesn't bring in lots of money to the local economy!
Yeah, it seems that when we have really hot fishing here, it always does the opposite in Alaska. Washington Fish and Wildlife says the king fishing should remain hot, but that the kings still out a ways are averaging even bigger. Gotta love la nina years! Mike
