burbot in jordan river? - j_wig - 07-16-2012

my younger brother went fishing in the bluffdale canal near the jordan river a few days ago and caught this.
not sure but that sure looks like a burbot to me, has anyone else heard anything else about them being caught in the valley?

Probably a catch from some bucket biologist dumping his discards in the river. Damm shame the Jordan River in Bluffdale not too far from Utah Lake

If this isn't a joke I would contact fish and game. Show them the pics and give them the pertinent information. May want to hang onto that fish as they may want to look at it.

Not sure what it is but it aint a burbot. Look at the sucker mouth, burbot have a large mouth out the front. Looks more likely to be a pet fish discard.

That's the weirdest thing I've ever seen...Also, why fish the canals instead of the actual river? Aren't there more fish in the actual river?

Can't see a barbel either. Doesn't mean it isn't there though. Let's hope it's not a snakehead either. That's one way to get a few million in federal dollars and a few tons of rotenone dumped in the Jordan.

I thought Snakehead too, but don't know enough about them or burbot to say.

Unfortunately he didn't keep the fish, Ive got him giving the fish and game a call tomorrow and to hold onto the next one and have someone come out and verify it. I appreciate the feedback

I've fished the canals at the south end of the valley my whole life and I hit the Jordan 1-2 times per week and have never caught anything like this!
It would be horrible to see a rotenone treatment on UL and/or the Jordan. My heart would not be able to take it to see all them big walleye belly up and the gulls picking at them.
The feds would never rotenone UL cause of the Junie but I don't know what would happen to the JR.
I just hope those burbot(?) don't make it to the GSL!!!

i dont think they would be able to survve in the GSL. and i do think its a burbot but a snakehead isnt out of the question, i dont know how cold of water a snakehead can survive in either.

+1 what fish can survive in the GSL, dont see a threat there.

Looks like a Dojo Loach.

looks like a burbot to me, look at the fins on the back in these two comparisons, the snakehead is one continuous fin, where the burbot has a smaller fin, then the long fin down its back.
snakehead:

burbot:

its hard to see its mouth in the photograph, but coloring and fin structure matches the burbot more. bucket biologist I betcha...

Re: [j_wig] burbot in jordan river? - dowhatwecan - 07-16-2012

The fish looks like a weather loach. They were illegally introduced into the Jordan River several years ago and have established a reproducing population throughout the Jordan River system, including the marshes surrounding the Great Salt Lake. These fish are a popular aquarium fish and likely as not an aquarium owner released some instead of properly disposing of them. I have attached a picture of a weather loach in an aquarium to compare. These fish really get active in the Jordan River during summer thunder storms and warm weather rain events. They can leave permanent water sources and "walk" to other suitable habitat.

I really hope that one day folks begin to understand the damage that these illegal releases can cause, but right now it seems each year we see a growing number of aquarium, sport and bait fish being illegally released at the detriment of many fisheries.

Whoa! Thanks for the clairification on that. So my question is how do they taste?

Thanks Drew, I had no idea there was an established population of these fish in the Jordan River. Interesting and disappointing. Evidently they do survive our winters.

[left]Bingo!

I was going to say Crimeny! How many of you Utahn's have even caught a burbot? That does not look like a burbot! (to me anyways, I've caught hundreds of them) Just barely.

I have said it before and I'll say it again, it is only a matter of time before they DO end up in Utah though by some idiot.
