Ideas for a high mt lake around 3hrs from boise - hizah - 08-03-2012

Thinking about heading up again, went to emerald a few weeks ago, lots of small brooks, but still fun. Probably going to the same general area unless someone knows something better.
Thanks

There is a fire in the trinities right now. If they get it out the trinity lakes are hot. Beautiful place to be and great ride in and the fishin is good. If the fires are out my family and afew more are heading there next weekend. By the way that is my huntin spot and i am worried!

When you going and how long of a trip do you want? I just got back from a killer trip myself (at least for quantity). How are your legs? I have some ideas but I need to know what you are looking for.

Will you hike? Crater lake, up the Slate Creek drainage off of 75 between Stanley and Clayton has a lot of really nice goldens in it.. haven't been there this year but going soon. Last year hiked up there without the rod, and there were 12-16 inch trout in the shallows just teasing me, it was unreal. It's a brutal hike though, 4+ miles in on a steep grade mining road. Hiking only, it's not passable to horses, dirtbikes, atvs, etc. Maybe that's why there's so many big fish Smile

Are these the true California golden trout or the golden rainbow trout(palomino)? There is a big difference between em and I would hate to hike something like that to find the same species I can find in a local pond once in a whileSmile

I can about guarantee they are true goldens. They wouldn't stock those trashy "Palominos" in the pristine high lakes of Idaho!

When they stock the " yellow colored" rainbows they list them as "unspecified rainbows", and they generally only stock them in community or kid pond type situations.

When they stock golden trout in the high lakes they are true Calf. goldens not the palomino or albino rainbows.

As others have said, yep, real california goldens... there are also a lot of stocked 'cutts there for ya too. Again, its a brutal hike... I'm surprised they put this much fish in a lake so remote!
