Another Bass Fishing Excursion - gstott - 08-08-2012 Well I had a nice long well thought out report, but the site screwed up and erased the whole thing. Then it would only show one or two pics, so I had to load them up one at a time. So here is the condensed version. Action wasn't as fast as before, the weather was much calmer, but I caught 21 bass, 12 were 16" or bigger. I caught them on squarebills and lipless cranks fished around vegetation. I fished from 12:30-4:30. I also met Pharticus at the boat launch which was cool. The end. (where is the drooling emoticon!) [signature] Re: [gstott] Another Bass Fishing Excursion - elkmagnet - 08-08-2012 That's a pile of fish good job. [signature] Re: [gstott] Another Bass Fishing Excursion - catmaster23 - 08-08-2012 Nice j bro! Is it possible to launch a boat or is it too low? [signature] Re: [catmaster23] Another Bass Fishing Excursion - Pharticus - 08-08-2012 Yeah, it was good to put a face with the name. We ended up faring much better that afternoon (and the next day... and this morning) on Lamont and Johnson. Ended up having an epic fish fry. Burned through multiple packages of the worms I ended up striking gold with! Fun stuff. [quote catmaster23]Nice j bro! Is it possible to launch a boat or is it too low?[/quote] I dropped my trailer off the end of the ramp. If your trailer can take it and your vehicle can yank it, you're good. If not, better wait 'til 2013... [signature] Re: [gstott] Another Bass Fishing Excursion - Nick1983 - 08-08-2012 That's certainly what I'd define as "fun" Nice work! [signature] Re: [catmaster23] Another Bass Fishing Excursion - gstott - 08-09-2012 You can still launch a boat for a little while anyway. There's a few feet of ramp in the water. [signature] Re: [Pharticus] Another Bass Fishing Excursion - gstott - 08-09-2012 Glad to hear you got into some fish. Did you get into some nice panfish? I need to do a trip with fish tacos in mind pretty soon. [signature] Re: [Nick1983] Another Bass Fishing Excursion - gstott - 08-09-2012 Thanks everybody. I've been really fortunate with the bass there lately. [signature] Re: [gstott] Another Bass Fishing Excursion - catmaster23 - 08-09-2012 I love how the fish there will be washed out with a faint strip, or washed out with a really dark strip, then you get the ones like your firs pic that are almost black. Here's a couple more examples [signature] Re: [catmaster23] Another Bass Fishing Excursion - gstott - 08-09-2012 They definitely have some interesting color patterns. The first one I got was way washed out, and I figured they would all be like that as the water is pea green and murky right now. I was surprised to get such a variety, especially that really green one. [signature] Re: [gstott] Another Bass Fishing Excursion - Pharticus - 08-09-2012 [quote gstott]Did you get into some nice panfish?[/quote] Nope. Over an evening, a full day, and a morning, we boated almost 200 fish. Probably 70% were LMB. The panfish we caught worth talking about were a pair of 10" perch out of Lamont and a pair of ??8"?? bluegill. Otherwise it was all 11-14" LMB with a handful of of Johnson that were at 15". Not a single BIG fish (though there was a near miss @ Johnson with a tiger muskie when two poles had frantic bluegill on their lines) - but good fillet-size bass. Went through around $25 of soft plastics in the process. lol Fun note: as we filleted, I examined stomachs. There was one 12" bass with an 8" plastic lizard in it! And other than that, those that had discernible evidence of food in them were ALL filled with dragonfly. [signature] Re: [Pharticus] Another Bass Fishing Excursion - gstott - 08-09-2012 Well, they've gotten a little bigger in those ponds since I last fished there. It's probably good to thin a few of those little guys out. I was out in Minnesota in June and had a fish tear my Tiki Stick off my line. Later that evening I was fishing with a popper and caught a little 12" smallie and it puked up my Tiki Stick from before. I took it back and caught some more fish on it. Another time I caught a bass at Weston that was 11.5". I decided to keep it to add to the perch I had caught, and while it was in my basket, it threw up a 7" plastic worm and a mouse. That's not surprising that they were eating dragon fly nymphs. As I was leaving on Monday, I drove through a bunch of adult dragonflies, and I thought that I should bring a fly rod next time and try fishing a dragon fly nymph imitation. Maybe I will. How were the water levels and clarity at those ponds? [signature] Re: [gstott] Another Bass Fishing Excursion - Pharticus - 08-10-2012 [quote gstott]How were the water levels and clarity at those ponds?[/quote] Lamont has that almost teal-colored hue to it, and with my glasses I can see about 3.5-4.5' down. Johnson is pretty clear (though I swear it was murkier on day 2 - perhaps an algae bloom about to explode) - I could probably see down about 5-6'... [signature] Re: [Pharticus] Another Bass Fishing Excursion - gstott - 08-10-2012 That's good to hear. I may venture over to one if I get sick of the pea soup, though so far I'm doing pretty well in the slurry. [signature] |
