Spots near Hwy 6? - Kim-n-Kota - 09-27-2012
We are going though 9-Mile canyon this weekend and I was hoping to get some flies wet on the way home. Can anyone offer advice on the best place to fish between SLC and Price?
I have been considering either "Lower Fish Creek" (Price River) below Scofield Reservoir or Diamond Fork. Or somewhere else?

Might give Thistle Creek a try. The Hopper action was pretty good a couple weeks ago. Easy access and lots of small beaver ponds. [

I'd second Thistle Creek especially if it's just going to be a brief stop to fish. Action is usually very fast and many descent browns. Diamond Fork can be fickle at times and not all that uncommon to spend an hour with nothing to show. Thistle other than high water it's almost impossible to get skunked. You could also try Soldiers Creek in Spanish Fork canyon. Lower down is very turbid but the upper reaches are usually clearer.

Nice. I'll have to give Thistle a try. My guidebook mentioned lots of private property (it's usually half wrong but...) that turned me off. Issue, non-issue?
How far off the freeway do you need to go?

Yeah, the buddy I'm going with is not a patient guy so action would be preferable to size... thanks for the tip! Is the whole creek good or is there (ahem..) a particular place to start, that you'd share? Totally new to the area.

There is a bit of private property on Thistle, but much of it has been opened to the public for fishing. You will see many ladders installed over the barbed wire fences. I haven't been there in ages, but I used to do quite well on Thistle. I caught many decent browns up to around 18".
Lower Fish Creek used to be my favorite trout stream, but I don't know that it has recovered from a winter kill a few years back.
Diamond Fork can be really great this time of year with mahogony duns and October caddis coming off. Once again though, it's been about ten years since I last fished it, so much has likely changed.

As gstott mentioned look for the public access ladders and my favorite spot wasn't private anyway. It's just a couple miles off highway 6. I haven't fished it this summer due to a foot injury but as gstott mentioned 15- 18 inches hasn't been uncommon for the browns and I managed a single 19 incher out of there once. Diamond Fork has much bigger browns and can be good just much less reliable in producing fish. If you are likely to have a GPS with you let me know and I'll pm you the coordinates to my favorite spot if I can locate it on a map reliable.
