Do you ever feel like... - Kim-n-Kota - 11-08-2012

...you're catching exactly the same fish over and over again? Today it was an 8" brown on the Weeb. With all the reports and pics I've seen coming out of that water I was kinda hoping for something with a tad more size... Can't really complain though because I caught him 9 times on a dry and once on a scud. Not bad for a little lunch break fishin.

Nope don't have that problem. Try a big ole streamer or a size 8 or 10 nymph cuts down on the dinks.

Really?? All I meant to say I'd that the using the same tactics repeatedly in the same hole tends to yield the same result. I've experienced this multiple times on different waters, where the majority of fish I catch seem to be of roughly the same size and appearance. This is weird?

The 7 11-13" browns i got one after the other taking BWOs on the MP last week. The hole on the Jordan where I've got 40-someodd carp but nothing small and nothing bigger than 18". I could go on for a while. But I can count on catching "the same fish" at these places. It was a joke that apparently didn't work. Sorry.

Something inside of me refuses to go subsurface when fish are rising.. even if its smaller ones, I will take 3 fish on a dry on my first 3 casts anyday. It was a good hours fishing and I intend to catch me some HOGS one day when I have the time.

There is nothing wrong with dry fly fishing. Myself, If I have the choice would much rather dry fly. Nothing like seeing the take.
I caught one Carp on a Caddid and it was memorable for sure.
Heck I would target 4" is they were rising[Smile]
I am sure I have caught the same fish before, but as I said, I never noticed.
we still have to hit a stream together. I have even hit Millcreek in the winter .

I don't think your experience is strange. It seems like sometimes certain age classes of trout hold in some pools together. The teenager gangs! They might even be in just a small section of the pool.

Then too there is the carrying capacity of the water. Some waters don't hold enough food or habitat to support many if any large fish. Those 8 inchers may stay 8 inches and never grow bigger. If there is a good connection to a larger stream or lake, the bigger fish will migrate out, but it is great when they come back even bigger as spawners!

If there is plenty of easy food, or a lot of fishing pressure, or maybe even that the fish have seen you, you might be missing some larger "wiser" fish that are there. They may hang deeper and may just be spooked when the smaller greedy fish get hooked. You might try changing some tactics such as time of day, section of the pool to fish first, and commando stealth.

Also some years may have been better for spawning or survival of the fingerlings, so you get really strong year classes. Also consider if they are planters or not.

No matter the size, fishing small streams is a lot of fun.

I hear ya! But hey, that can still make for a fun afternoon! And I agree with fg, now that i have learned how to land more fish while dry fly I enjoy It way more than nymphing. Even if the fish are smaller. I enjoy seeing the take and it makes me feel like I am more talented at this sport than i really am!

When I catch 8"ers, my wife thinks they are 14"ers. SHHH, don't tell her different![Wink]

Ha! Yes, a group of teenagers cruising around together. That's exactly what it was like. I almost wonder if they had just been stocked or something too. Not sure if they stock browns in the Weeb (??) but that might explain the consistent size and their hungryness. Also they seemed pale and silvery to me.. but that's compared to the spawning creekers I've been getting lately.
