Mantua 12/31/12 - Trclements - 01-01-2013 I decided to hit up Mantua looking for perch yesterday. My family was going to go but our little boy was sick so they stayed home. I parked along the south dime and walked out to where the city of tents were going up. I drilled a couple of test holes and eventually found 15 ft of water and set up my tent. Within the first hour I had caught 4 different species. Largemouth, bluegill, rainbow, and perch. I ended up catching about 10 perch and I threw a few tiny ones back, but I did manage to get one nice one that was about 10 inches. I got 3 largemouth bass. Two were really nice keepers and 2 plantar rainbows. The bluegill fishing was by far the hottest. I caught 3-4 really nice fat bluegills and probably a dozen more smaller ones. The fishing slowed down a bit around 11 am so I went outside and drilled a new hole about 15 feet away from my tent to try. I pulled probably 10 bluegill out of that one hole and 5 perch. Early everything was hitting a ice fly with either a piece of night crawler or wax work on it, but then I switched to an orange ratfinkee with a wax worm and the fish went nuts for it. I was hooking a bluegill every time I droped it to the bottom and brought it up about 6-12 inches. Thanks to all for the advice on where to go. It was a great way to end 2012. Here is a pick of some of the fish I caught. [signature] Re: [Trclements] Mantua 12/31/12 - happybob91 - 01-01-2013 Beautiful! Nice fish! Nice looking bass - bigger than the bow. Curious - did they go for crawler or waxie? Rat-finkees and Bluegills - a match made in heaven. Or Flat Rinkees - if you're so inclined. Green and Pink - two great colors indeed. I was out there too - may have passed you along the way. Re: [CoyoteSpinner] Mantua 12/31/12 - Trclements - 01-01-2013 One bass took an ice fly with a worm and a small one took an ice fly with a wax worm. That was my first trip to Mantua. It was nice carching something other than trout. [signature] |
