Most times I would dare take a car but there have been other times where it's too slick. They plow the road with a road grader and it is time consuming so if you go on a day where there a lot of snow coming down you may be there a while. A few years ago, I followed behind a car that however slow they drove they couldn't drive slow enough to keep from bouncing off of the snow banks on either side of the road. They did considerable fender-bender damage to their vehicle. It takes 6 to 10 minutes to put them on and 2 to 5 minutes to take them off and you can drive anywhere it's icy or snow packed with no problems. It is a good idea to have a chain or tow strap. Look at the weather forecast if it calls for wind, I would not drive a car down that road. The drifts can be hard to get through in a 4x4 with high ground clearance, I have been stuck on that road before.
