Bourbot First Timmer - daleiste - 01-22-2013 I have not had a chance to go after Bourbot but have been following many threads relating to them. I am in the process of planning a trip and would like to get an idea of some good resources where I can go and learn where to go and what to use. I will be going to end of Feb. I generally fish Strawberry and other lakes in the winter but have not had a chance to experience the Gorge or the Burbot. Thank you in advance with any help in pointing me in the right direction. Such as: Firehole, Holmes Crossing, Buckboard, Lost Dog; Fish at night; Depth 10'-30'; Glow jigs tipped with sucker, chub or nightcrawlers; Up to 6 rods allowed (restrictions apply); etc. They are slimiest fish you will ever likely catch. Have fun and good luck. [signature] Re: [daleiste] Bourbot First Timmer - Marathonman - 01-22-2013 Good luck to ya. I'm planning my 1st "successful" trip. Bombed out before. I'm going this week or/and next week. I just can't stand the cold. Make sure you bring a tent and heater. Most all the info I needed to be successful was right here on the BFT UT forum. I think more important than choosing the general area of the lake is choosing the specific area within that location to fish. I caught burbot at both Firehole and Holmes Crossing on successive nights. Look for structure near the channel. I would suggest arriving a couple hours early and drill lots of holes to check depths, or make sure you have a depth finder better than mine that can shoot through ice and identify structure. I caught fish in areas where no one had drilled holes before, but I did find usefulness in noting where others drilled, and fishing those or similar areas. While getting a feel for it, set up some poles/tip-ups where other's have fished, and then explore new areas as well. Look for rocky cliff areas that extend into the water and fish close to them. Use glow jigs tipped with minnows or sucker meat and charge your jigs as often as possible, it seemed to help alot. I have heard of people dead sticking(not jigging) but I actually did better doing a slow jig, that way if I felt any resistant while lifting up I would set the hook. They bite very light, even the big ones so if you feel any small twitch or resistance just set hard. Also I would be sure to have a nice set of pliers handy as the burbots mouth is very tough and hard to get a hook out of. Some even grind off the barb of the hooks to go burbot fishing, now I know why. I hppe this helps a little, best of luck, happy fishing! As for the cold, we were there last week, fri, sat, and the coldest it got was 14 degrees. that was at 11:30 at nite. Dress warm and move form hole to hole slow jiging. Start at 4 pm and catch a few lakers to start with. Five of us got 32 lakers and 31 burbs the first nite. The weather up there is dryer and warmer than under the inverson. It was colder in the afternoon when we got home that at 11 at nite on the gorge. [signature] Re: [daleiste] Bourbot First Timmer - kbfan - 01-25-2013 Is the bash a pretty popular event? Like a ton of people participate or is it just like most other events? Just tryin to figure out what to expect. Thank you [signature] Re: [kbfan] Bourbot First Timmer - Ryno - 01-25-2013 About 450 people in 2011 and 150 in 2012. There wasn't much ice in 2012.
