Bear Lake? - maghunter - 01-23-2013

Local News 8 had a story about a guy who broke through the ice at Bear while ice fishing on his 4 wheeler. Sounds like he made it out alright and had to spend a night in the hospital. So has anybody been ice fishing down there, and if so how is the fishing? I know it doesn't always freeze up and it might be fun to give it a try (once the ice gets a little thicker tho). Be safe out there

I went out on Tuesday and fished. The ice was poping and cracking alot around 2:00 it felt like an earthquake and we decided to get off and the ice had moved 2ft and we had to find another way to shore. I wouldn't take my kids on it yet and I wouldn't go alone.

Made it off to tell the story, thats good. What was the thickness? And did you have any luck? That would have scared me off the ice. That is a big puddle to find yourself in the water unexpectedly. Good to see ya'll made it off safe though.

Rock Beds aka The "Rock Pile" is on the southwest corner of the lake right next to the highway. There is a pullout where you can park.

[Wink] There is a rock pile that was put in north of the boat ramp on the West side a few years back as well as the rock pile north of the time shares on the south west side. Looked like a city on the ice there today. [fishin] I fished today and saw five 10 lb or better macks caught around the corner south of the rock pile. I caught two cuts and brought one home. A fishing friend I met (Paul Dobson) from Richmond Utah, caught a 10-12 lb mack when we were the only two left on the ice. I left after dark. Ice was plenty good to hold a wheeler where I was at. He hooked and lost this fish three times within about five minutes, The fourth time he hooked him for good.
