Roberts Gravel Pond info - ross220 - 02-13-2013

Does anyone have any idea how the ice conditions and fishing is at Roberts. I have got a bunch a kids together that want to go ice fishing and I have been thinking about going to Roberts. I have never been there before, but have heard it is a good place for kids to enjoy the ice and catch some fish, although they are small. Any info at all would be great. Thanks.

I ice fished it a little last winter, and occasionally I go back in an effort to get back in the catfish that can be had there - but truth be told (in my experience) that poor pond is just so overpopulated with perch that it's not worth the effort - and this late in the season the planter trout are scarce. When people say the perch are small - it's a whole new kind of small, like 2" small. I have rapala's that big. That's my two cents though - someone else may have better things to say!

If it were me taking the scouts out I'd head to Mackay reservoir for a guaranteed catch! That place is always a sure bet with kids and kokanee, along with the occasional trout!

Thanks Bone, I figured the fish might be on the small side but not that small. A trip to Mackay was going to be my second choice but I thought that the kids might like something new. We always do well at Mackay but that is the only place most of these kids have been Ice fishing and I was wanting to broaden their horizions a little bit.

Depending on how far you want to travel, Montpelier has lots of kid sized perch. 6-8 inchers The more caught the better!

If you are north of IF, then sometimes it is almost as close to go through Star Valley to Montpelier Res, as it is to go to Mackay Res. Kokes vs perch!

Have fun where ever you go, and let us know how you did.

There are still trout in Roberts. We caught 7 in a couple of hours while my nephew slew the perch. The trick is to keep the perch off. Try a Kastmaster 1-2 feet under the ice and jig agressively.

FWIW, the trout were slimy. Don't know if that affects the pallatability, but it puts me off my feedbag and they go back down the hole.
