Prreliminary forecasts for salmon - Kodiak1 - 02-24-2013

Seattle Times announced that preliminary forecasts show good increases in chinook, coho, and pinks for the Columbia and Olympic Peninsula. King fishing has been off the hook, no pun intended, so far this season. There have been several derbies in the Seattle area and Canada, and in each case they have doubled the results from previous years. There is a huge number of pinks arriving this year, since they arrive on odd-numered years, and lately several million more arrive each time. It wasn't so long ago that they were predicting numbers in the hundreds of thousands, and now they talk about 9 million fish showing. A great experience for kids and adults alike, especially with the expanded limit of 4 pinks. Better make reservations now!! Mike

Love to hear great forcasts. Unfortunately they never seem to hit it right. I had a friend tell me that he saw a forcast just last week that said there was a possibility of only 365 catchable fish coming over granite dam! OUCH if that's the case.

True. But they do get it right more often than not! But, sometimes they are REALLY wrong. However, this year there is lots of supporting evidence....Indian commercial boats are hammering them, Wash. Fish and Wildlife test fishermen are doing well, and blackmouth fishing is going great guns. They just opened Sekiu for salmon last Saturday, and the few that got out there nailed the kings. By the way, how would you like the job of test fisherman. I saw two of them in their offical boat a couple of years ago, and they caught and tagged over a hundred salmon that day. Most were shakers, but still, there has to be worse jobs out there!! Mike

If you decide to make the trip my advice would be to go on a odd year when the pinks are runing. In 2007 we were usually back at the dock by 9:00 am with our 12 salmon (3 guys) with pinks up to 8#. I tried to run 3 poles and couldn't do it so we stuck with the 2 down riggers instead. Many times you would get bit as soon as you started to lower the cannon ball down. Never had to fish much deeper then 20-30 feet below the surface. [cool]

The fall run forcast looks good. It aint anywheres rosy for the spring run.

Scoll down past the steelhead info. IDFG has a pre-season run prediction. Dont look good.
