Is it premature to think UL will be ice free withing the week - UVUbass - 03-07-2013
with the days getting longer, temps rising and the storms blowing...it could happen soon I am thinking

Let's all hope for it. I only can see that hot springs and by Lindon harbor is opening up but let the boating season start soon. I want to slam in some big kitties this spring.

I drove down to the Saratoga Springs marina yesterday afternoon just to see if the ice was coming off yet and it hadn't even started. In fact, there were three fellows out walking on the ice apparently conducting some sort of survey. They had a generator and some electronic appartus set up at the edge of the parking lot with a ground rod driven into the ground and two wires run out onto the ice. They were carrying something that looked like the GPS survey units that land surveyors now use. I would have been very uneasy about venturing onto that ice. It looked very grainy on the surface like it does just before it starts breaking up.

This morning the view from AF Harbor presents a different picture!! Main lake ice has turned dark grey, sure sign that it is rotting. Ice is starting to push up on the north side of the breakwater. There are large cracks in the main pack and what appears to be some open water out in the middle of the lake. So, if the wind keeps up, the move is on !! Now, the lake may clear off, but the harbors will take some time to clear !! The cap on the harbor looked pretty solid !!

Ice has stacked 5-6' high on rocky points on the west side as of last monday morning, proof the cap has shifted a little.
My money is on march 15th or 16th the lake will be open with the harbors opening up maybe 4 or5 days after that.
Let the betting begin!
