Starvation Revenge - wyoguy - 03-08-2013 Not liking the way the perch treated us on Monday, TopH2O , a friend of his and I made another assualt on Starvation yesterday. With the help of Hookngrinin, we were able to find some perch that were silly enough to play with us. The weather was nice with a breaze of maybe 10 mph, enough to turn the ice a little slushy ( 1/2 in. ) by the time we left. The edges where we entered were good coming and going, but with the weather staying as warm as it is, that is going to change, We found the perch in 27 -30 FOW and did well with the usual ice flys beneath a castmaster tipped with eyes. Perch were mostly 9 in. with a few 10's. We also caught a couple over 11 and I caught 1 'Seegar' walleye. I came home with 35 perch and I'm sure the other's did at least as well. Thanks, Chad [signature] Re: [Javelin18] Starvation Revenge - wyoguy - 03-08-2013 PM sent [signature] Re: [wyoguy] Starvation Revenge - wiperhunter2 - 03-09-2013 Good going Gary, thanks for sharing your report and pic. Sounds like it is just a matter of finding an active school. It sure is nice when other members helps us out with those locations. Is that you first eye through the ice? Was it bigger than my 12 in eye from a few weeks back? [signature] Re: [wiperhunter2] Starvation Revenge - wyoguy - 03-09-2013 Curt, oh yea, mine was a good 1/4 in. longer than yours! I caught one earlier in the winter, but it too was small. [signature] Re: [wiperhunter2] Starvation Revenge - slimmer - 03-09-2013 []congrats on ur revenge. with that report i think 1 more trip on the harddeck is in my on my schedule [signature] Re: [wyoguy] Starvation Revenge - perchound - 03-09-2013 Hey Gary, nice of ya to show me how it's done when I'm not there. Way to go and good on ya, glad you were able to slay some of them elusive perch, I'm definitely jealous now. Wish I could make it up there again but it's not in the cards for this year, however I am planning on hitting Echo Sunday morning for a few hours if I can get on the ice. Was TopH20 with ya at Starvy too? [signature] Re: [perchound] Starvation Revenge - wyoguy - 03-09-2013 Yes, Mike, a friend and one of his brothers showed up for a couple hours. Sorry we never got into them when you were there. [signature] Re: [wyoguy] Starvation Revenge - perchound - 03-09-2013 Sent you a PM Gary. [signature] Re: [wyoguy] Starvation Revenge - TopH2O - 03-09-2013 Gary is being his modest self. He kicked our butts out there yesterday even though I started the catching with about 8 or 9 nice fat perch around 9.5 to 10.5 inches. I only took 19 home yesterday and I believe my friend Alan took about 24 back to Price. My brother Patrick got about 20 before he had to leave early for some work related stops in Park City. We fished in the Indian Bay area in 27 to 32 feet of water some distance west of where we were on the last trip. It was good to know the fish are still willing to hit if you can find a school. I shot some depth readings through the ice with my Showdown and found a few locations with active perch. I just pour a little water on the surface and the transducer will make good contact and shoot through giving a pretty good reading if the ice is solid and clear. It was a nice weather day and the catching was worth the return trip. I'm pretty sure there's another trip in the cards for early next week. Monday and Tuesday are looking like sunscreen days out on the ice and temps around 45. Who could ask for anything better for late season ice fishing? A long board will definetly be wth us if we go next week. The edges were somewhat thin but the gap wasn't anything you couldn't just walk over with a little stretch. Edit for safety note: Don't even think about fishing Starvation without cleats on your boots. There is very little snow on the ice and it will be very slick if the overnight temperatures go below freezing (which they will the next few nights). The surface got a little soft during the day and the traction improved although we kept our cleats on all day. Avoid a potentially dangerous injury by falling on the ice. I've been there and done that with two broken ribs from a fall at Mill Meadow a few years ago. Safety first....watch the edges and have someone with you. Also carry a set of ice picks which you can buy or make yourself with a wood handle and nails for spikes. Can't believe Gary had to hog all those perch to himself, who woulda thunk it. I'm going to see if I can't swing starvy on sunday for some revenge of my own. Hope you guy's left some for me. [signature] Re: [perchound] Starvation Revenge - TopH2O - 03-09-2013 I'm pretty sure there's at least 18 or 20 perch left in that lake. More than enough for a meal or two. Good luck and let us know how you do. I think we'll give it one more try on Monday or Tuesday depending on when the other guys can go. Mike [signature] Re: [wyoguy] Starvation Revenge - fsh4fun05 - 03-09-2013 I'm verrrrry happy to hear all the success stories of perch this year but I will be even more happy when I hear the reports about the edges getting too soft. Just sayin', congrats on the good fishing, the perch seem to have been hungry this ice season. I'm not sure if that's good or bad but I will put in the time on the soft water to find out! Thanks for the report. [signature] Re: [fsh4fun05] Starvation Revenge - TopH2O - 03-09-2013 <..............Picture of my boat. The open water will be here soon enough. It should be a banner year at Starvtion for all species. The perch will produce millions of young and all the fish eat them, even the perch. The rainbows are in great shape and they are easily caught by the trollers. I think the smallmouth and walleye fishing will be as good as it's been in years. I plan on putting my Lund on the lake and camping at the main campground this year. Say hello if you see me. I have a silver and gray Lund 1850 with a Merc 150 EFI. I drive a dark charcoal Ford F250 crew cab and I'll have my Lance camper on it when I go to Starvy and camp. Plates on my truck are "TOPH2O". Who'd a thunk it. Mike [signature] Re: [TopH2O] Starvation Revenge - fsh4fun05 - 03-09-2013 Sounds good, I've got 40 acres 8 miles away from Starvation and I plan on putting the smack down on the fishes this year...again. The Catch a Cure for Cancer tournament is June 22nd. It's a team tournament and a good cause. I'm going to try to get some more prizes donated and if nothing else, it's a good time. It's the kind of tournament I like, it doesn't matter if you come in first place or last place. Participating is the most important thing and the kids at Camp Hobe benefit from the donations. I'll be in the ol' Viper Coral-best FISH n' ski ever made. Those boys love their bass boats but I love my bass boat with a windshield! [signature] Re: [fsh4fun05] Starvation Revenge - wyoguy - 03-09-2013 fsh4fun05, Kokanee Creek Tackle would like to donate some of our new worm harnesses for prizes in your tourney. Send me a PM about where we can send you some stuff. [signature] Re: [wyoguy] Starvation Revenge - stan55 - 03-09-2013 I was up on Starvy 3/8. Bet we fished the exact spot you were at since the holes were all over Didn't even need to fire up the auger[cool] Caught 50+ perch all of them nice sized. Kept 10 for dinner. Had to experiment a bit to get the bite going. Wax worms covered in Smelly Jelly got the perch fired up. Jigs had to be a vertical presentation. Horizontal jigs like Ratso and Finkees were flat out ignored. Kastmasters and Swedish pimples scored well. The school was not moving so we fished the same few holes all day. Depth was about 28ft. Bonus fish were two walleyes and a fat rainbow. They are filling Starvy up so edges are pulling away. Had to jump to the ice deck - long stride wasn't enough. [signature] Re: [wyoguy] Starvation Revenge - fsh4fun05 - 03-09-2013 I'll get some contact info and send you a pm. Thanks! [signature] Re: [stan55] Starvation Revenge - wiperhunter2 - 03-09-2013 Well that is another good report and I'm starting to think one last trip might be in order. Thanks for sharing the added details on the method you used, those little details can make all the difference between a good day and a great day of catching fish. Sounds like I need to bring my hip waders. PM sent [signature] |
