Last time I fished Pyramid was forty or so years ago when I was in college at UNR but back then the go to rig was a #2 Nebco Torpedo spoon in fluorescent red with black spots. We'd sometimes tie on a big black or olive wooly worm fly on about a 3' trailer.

Lot has changed since then, hope you have good luck.

Hi Nymph, thanks for stopping by the NV board. We don't have many (if any) members from the northern area that actively post around here, so I'm not sure that you'll get any input from locals. I am not familiar with Pyramid Lake so I cannot offer any info. Best of luck and hopefully some one will chime in with a few tips. Please do post a report after your trip. Fish on [fishin]

I worked in a Flyfishing shop in the 80's, I know alot of guys that fished Pyramid every year. Flygoddess mentioned the ladder you take a step ladder and carry it out as far as you can then stand on the ladder so you can cast farther and are up out of the water. They used a shooting head sinking line and used what I think was called iceline as backing, it is a slick black coated dacron I think, that is how you get the max casting distance with a flyrod. As for flies variations of leaches and woolyworms, woolybuggers were the deal back then. Wine and black, olive and black, wine and olive.

If my memory serves me right there is a hatchery there or was a hatchery there and that is the key area to fish for the Big Lahaughton cutts (sp) .

Slow fishing for numbers but the average fish was over 20" back then have not heard anything about it for a long time good luck [fishin]

It's on my list as well but I'm thinking in a couple years when the over 20 lb population should expand as the reintroduced pyramid lake strain LCT's are still relatively young. I've seen videos of them using the ladders there. Why is that the preferred way to fish? Can you float/ use a boat? Is it just the best way to reach them without floating?

You can use a tube/toon or boat and many do. From what I heard from someone that does both toon and ladder, the weather changes so quickly there and the wind can be brutal. I know I fish a couple of lakes that a pontoon would make life wonderful, but with the winds shore is less of a pain.

The wind can come up outta nowhere on Pyramid and it can be brutal. If you're ever there out on the water and see dust kicking up from the playa on the north end, head for the closest shore.

in the 2012 fresh water record book pyrimid holds the record for cutthroat on 4 pound test at a 17 pound cutt caught in 2011. the biggest cutthroats in the wrld have came from pyrimid lake, befor the LCT cutts were said to be extinct a 41 pound one came out of there. it has been 7 years now that they have been stocking them back in since they got a healthy pure strain in the hatcheries. it holds the potential for huge cutts, as that is one of the very very few bodies of water to have the LCT
