Pelican Lake from shore info? - Panhound - 05-13-2013

Planning my annual Memorial Day fishing trip with my Dad for bluegill. Just wanted to know if its fishable from short or if its just reeds?

There is not much shore access. I would't do it. Unless catching just a few is good with you. There are always a few bass and bluegill hanging by the ramp.

It is fish able from shore. I have seen people do well for bluegill along the dike/fishing pier west of the boat ramp. You could also fish the pump channel at the southeast corner of the lake.

Remember not to wade bare legged in Pelican, swimmers itch is not something you want to bring home with you!

What about shore fishing off of highway 88? Is the water beyond the reeds that you can still fish? That's usually where we fish from shore. Not sure where else on the lake has good shore access, nor how to get there. Thanks

You'll be wading, but it sounds like you knew that. The shore slopes so gradually, it stays shallow way out.

Where are you coming from? If it's SL Valley or Davis Co, etc. PM me, I might be able to help you out.

Actually Pelican offers some great shore fishing. The whole East side is accessable with several parking turnouts. I would fish the North shore however. You can drive pretty much to the lake and wade out in 2-4 ft of water there. The road is usally flooded this time of year and the bass and gills will fan beds on it. As already mentioned, wear waders, swimmer's itch is nasty.

The lake is so low right now that the road is nearly dry. As mentioned chest waders would be a good idea in order to access truly fishable water without a boat or tube. At least on the North and East sides there are few areas to catch fish from dry ground this year.

One of the best days of the year was had a Pelican, from the shore, with no waders. Gills and bass in the shallows would take just about any fly I could throw at them.
