Rod storage ideas - submoa - 07-01-2013

I have a deep V with no rod storage for a rod which doesn't break down. I fish the gorge primarily and that means totally different styles of fishing. I have trolling rods, jigging rods and casting rods. I end up laying them down in the front of the boat and the rods stick out through the area below the walk through windshield. This is a recipe for disaster with a four year old on the boat. I think I've found the solution but figured I'd drop a note on here to see what everyone else uses. The below link goes in a seat holder. I don't typically keep my seats in so this could work out okay I think. I truly don't know that I have any other options with my boat design. Walk through windshield, deep v 18.5 ft boat.

Are you talking about storage while driving to and from the Gorge or while fishing? Looks like a good idea while fishing.

Just while fishing.

I'm not sure why you can't mount those vertical rod holders in your boat without seeing pics of the inside but I'm sure you know better than me why they won't work. Sounds like this is a good way to get the job done without laying them around in your boat. Now days, they are using those spare seat holes to mount all sort of things. This is the first rod holders I've seen used in those spots but a couple of other uses for them is, pole holders, to hold your rod while trolling and even a fish finder holder, to use when jigging.

The fiberglass walls aren't straight up and down on the inside walls in the front of the boat so they would mount on at an angle which would have the rods hanging out of the boat and even if I could mount them straight up and down there, if I were to open where the storage areas where my life vests and batteries are they would hit the rod holder or rods when I would open them. The back of the boat I could in one spot but they would be in the way constantly when trolling. The only spot I could mount them is in front of the windshield and one side it would work, the other side the walk through windshield would smash them when it opens. I basically lay them down in the front of the boat now, it's a matter of time before I break one or more rod tips off. Mostly I only bring what I'm gong to troll for the kokanee and when I catch them I try and use my trolling rods to jig with if my daughter isn't freaking out to "go fast Dad" or lets go back to the cabin and ride the four wheeler. I am also looking for a magic spell that will have her ecstatic when my boat is at trolling speeds ha ha.

That's a neat idea there buddy. I think you would like that. You could possibly make one pretty easy with an old seat post, some PVC, and some cheap rod clips.

Good luck.

That's what I was thinking, PVC. I bet TubeDude could whip this up in his sleep. Will take me days ha ha.

Looks like a great idea. My boat has a four rod holder of the Berkeley type that you would hang on the wall attached horizontally on one side. I keep looking at it thinking it is in the way. PVC would work as well.

I have 3 vertical rod holders on both sides of my boat, just forward of the windshield on my 18'. Your absolutely correct in that when you open your walkthrough it will interfere, in my case with two rods. But for me this is the best option without adding one more thing to the floor plan of an already small boat. Prior to run up I lift the two rods about 6" out of the holder and shut the windshield. Or in most cases I just leave it open. Call me a dog, I like the wind in my face.

Also one of the nicest thing about having your rod tips up is you remove the chance of the little ones or the dog walking by and picking up a hook in the arm, eye, paw, etc.
