leaded line trolling know how? - 1sthound - 07-02-2013 Anyone have any suggestions on a site or forum for leaded line? I purchased a spool of 12lb. But I cannot spool it all even on a saltwater reel? its only 125yds with no backing on spool, Is a level wind type reel required? The spinning reels I have tried are an old Ryobi SX 5 and an Okuma ABF65. Do I need the whole 125yds or just a couple colors? Thanks for any tips 1sthound [signature] Re: [1sthound] leaded line trolling know how? - flygoddess - 07-02-2013 http://adventurecolorad.hubpages.com/hub/Fishing-with-Lead-Core-an-Introduction [signature] Re: [1sthound] leaded line trolling know how? - Therapist - 07-02-2013 The guys that put out Precision trolling have one on lead core also I believe. Trying to use lead core on a spinning reel is not smart due to the line twist a spinning reel will put in the line. Get your self a medium level wind like a Penn 9MF or similar by Okuma, etc. Don't use your spinning rod, get a 7-8ft med hvy action, glass rod, with a straight handle, trigger optional. Berkley, Wright McGill, etc make some good ones that are not expensive. This is an application where even the overrated Ugly stik has some good options. Now you will be set up to troll leadcore. If you do not want to go that heavy, get Precision Trolling and learn the 50/50 method !! Re: [1sthound] leaded line trolling know how? - wiperhunter2 - 07-02-2013 As stated, you need a level wind reel, you don't need more than ten colors of line for most fishing in Ut. You use it by counting the number of colors of line you let out, the heaver the line the deeper it sinks depending on your speed but in general, I start off by letting out two colors of line and go deeper until I start catching fish. For some reason there are times when I catch more fish with lead core than with down riggers. I just don't like it because it takes a lot of the fight away since it seems heavy. I usually give it out to company so they will catch some fish. I use the mono on a rigger or bottom bouncer. But the BB does the same thing too heavy, but that gets ya where the fish are. I have seen them used for Salt water fishing as well. It might work for lead core but it sounds a little heavy but hey, if it doesn't work you could always get another rod later, the reel is your main concern, imo. Get on eBay and find an old Penn level-wind reel. I have 3 of them that I use, and I don't think I paid more than $30 for any one of them. The pole you mentioned will do, but it is very heavy and that, combined with the leaded line, will pretty much take the fighting fun out of fishing. Most of my lead-core fishing has been at strawberry. I tie a big swivel on the end of the line, then attach either a dodger or pop-gear. Follow that with a stretch of mono (I usually use about 2-3 feet) then a simple hook with a worm on it. I slowly let the line out until it is at the depth / distance I want. Practice different distances, but know that the fish will usually be deeper when it is warmer. Start with 2 colors then go from there. I have often had hits as I'm slowly letting out the line. It's a simple, tried and true method that has landed a LOT of fish over the years. [signature] |
