Boat camping Idaho? - TT600 - 07-07-2013

I am headed north at the end of the month to go camping. I am trying to decide a good lake to stay at while boat camping and fishing. I am considering Dwarshak, Lake Chelan, and Lake Pend Oreille. Are there any others I should look at? I have done Yellowstone and Redfish. I would like to make it to BC someday but I think that is a little far for this year.

Dworshak is beautiful and has all kinds of area to explore. It has trout, smallies, and koks galore. That would be my choice.

Happy camping and fishing.

I second Dworshak. Beautiful piece of water. I think I could spend a month on there -- depending on water level of course!

I read that Dworshak will be full until the 8th and then start dropping. Hopefully not too much by the 24th. Sounds like that is my destination.

Seems like Dworshak will be 25-30 feet down by the time of my trip. any opinions on how this water level would affect fishing and camping?
Am also considering priest lake. Lake Chelan will supposedly be pretty full but I have heard the fishing is poor?

Its been a couple years since I was last up there but I don't think ~30 feet will make much of a difference. The dam is something like 700' tall I think. If it we me, I'd still go.

Check out this forum....a sister site to this one. There is currently a very active discussion by regulars at Dworshack. Mike

Chickened out on Dworshak due to low water.
We camped on Priest lake for three days and three days on Lake Pend Oreille. The fishing on each was slow..probably due to warm water. I would estimate 70 degrees on each. I caught trout in the priest lake tribs and bass on Pend Oreille. I tried trolling 30-40 feet deep in each lake for trout or macs but no luck. Someone on priest told me he was fishing 160 feet deep. Seems like it would be pitch black at that depth. I need to get a fish finder.
The water was very nice and clear for swimming. We got three inches rain on Friday at Pend Oreille. It rained for 20 hours straight. The drought is officially over.
