Stuck together rod pieces? - TylerKunz - 07-15-2013
I'm wondering if anybody has any ideas how to get 2 pieces of my 4 piece rod that are stuck together unstuck? It's never gotten stuck before but after i got off the river yesterday I couldn't pull them apart... Any ideas or tricks I can try?

First, do NOT hold the line guides when you pull. Hold the rod blank only.
Put one drop of dish soap on the joint and set the rod tip section up in the corner overnight.
In the morning, put the rod behind you in the crook of your knees and grab the blank on either side with your hands against your legs. Twist slightly and pull, also forcing your knees outward. (This forces you to pull in a straight line and adds a bit of strength.)
That ought to do it.
Now, clean all the soap out of the joint and rub the male end of the joint with a candle to prevent future sticking.

WD 40 sprayed on and give some time to work in
or
Apply a bit of heat or cold

Best technique ive seen is the two person hand over hand method Ill try to explain it
one person holds above the rod handle with one hand then with the other hand above the stuck rod ferrule. Another person facing the first person puts one hand above the first person hand ... too hard to explain heres a video fast forward ot the 1 minute mark

That cross over way except...
Put your hands ON his hands thereby increasing the grip strength of the bottom gripper.
PS. I rub my finger on the crook of my nose and rub that on the rod and have never had a rod stick together. I tried a lot of other tricks including wax but good old nose sweat/oil is the best I have ever found.

These are great ideas thanks all. I didn't realize this was such a normal thing since its never happened to me. Ill try the soap and wd-40 ideas first and it that doesn't work ill try the buddy system technique. Thanks guys. good to know about the nose sweat trick. I used to use that trick to get the head of my beer to go down faster, that way I could get it down faster [

Best trick I know is the cold method, if it has been a hot day the rod will expand a bit, at the end of the day dunk your rod in the cold river and it should come apart as the cold will contract it a bit, if at the truck use some ice from the cooler on the ferrules, does the trick.

Me too remo. Bag of frozen veggies on a rod joint works for me every time. Then rod behind the knees and pull.

Absolutely. If it is really stuck and you have a big freezer throw the sections in over night. Then run some hot tap water over the ferrule. Viole'
DON'T use WD-40. It's not good on the graphite. If you do, wipe it down with denatured alcohol after to get the residue off.
BTW Tyler, ear wax on the male end work wonders to keep them from getting stuck.

So I had my rod get stuck and I ended up trying to use the guides to seperate them and losend the guide, it didnt break but broke lose of the epoxy, I have everything to fix it but not sure if I can just put another layer of epoxy or what is the procedure to do this. Its a brand new rod I built myself so do I need to scuff it with scotch brite or something or what would you guys suggest?

Does the guide come all the way out of the wrap? If so I would carefully remove all thread and epoxy and re-wrap.
If the guide does not pull out from under the tread just put a bead of epoxy down at the foot of the guide and put the rod back on the turner so it can set up evenly.
