Large arbor style spinning reels... - Chris_530 - 07-16-2013

While researching reels that give you a little more casting distance than your average reel, I've come across the large arbor styled reels and it's gained my interest. Anyone have any thoughts as far as pros and cons on these? Seems that the main three that come up are the Pflueger Arbor, US Reel Supercaster and the Bass Pro Shops Johnny Morris series. All seem reasonably priced and have good reviews from their sellers sites. They claim to give you about 25-30% distance on your casts. I've always been fond of Pflueger reels and am quite tempted to give it a try.

I have never messed with that type of reel, but it's interesting. I wonder if it really works the way it says it does though. I'll explain.

The larger spool would most certainly counter some of the memory issues, as they wouldn't be as tight of coils. But, with a reel that size, if you use it on a rod that it matches with line class wise, the guides on the rods will be getting smacked pretty much scratching off any advantage you had.

The other thing is, that reel specifically notes countering memory issues. If you're using braid line, there is no memory, so the larger reel won't help, rather, it will hurt.

Just my 1.5 cents. [Smile]
