Fish Lake Loop (Uintas) - EvilTyeDyeTwin - 08-06-2013 Needing to redeem ourselves after Yellowstone National Park, TDT and I packed the fly rods for a Uinta adventure. Looking for quantity over quality, we chose the Fish Lake Loop up Weber Canyon. The trail has its scenic moments. And after a steep, rocky hike, the fly rods were busted out at Fish Lake. Throwing dries, the days objective was quickly at the end of the line. They all had outsanding color and beauty. The little guys were eagar for just about any fly. What a beauiful place to catch an catch Artic Grayling. We decided to stop at Round Lake on the way down. Where a few casts were thrown. And before long we were back on the trail. Mind you that pictures can be deceptive......the trail is everything but what is pictured here. This is the only section that is a flat single track. A picture of where we went that day (Dry Fork pictured in the center). And a picture of where we had to go. Happy Trails out there. Nice trip again, so you need to include trail length and elevation gains so us old timers can decide whether to try such a trip... You know you young'uns can go forever uphill without a stop, and as the years start to catch up the rest of us have to plan what's within our range.... Thanks for the report... It is very rocky, and very uphill. I say it is tough and I backcountry ski over 100 days a season. The trail is about 4.2 miles to Fish Lake, and thats nothing but uphill. We are planning on going back up to the Fish Lake Loop this fall and you are more than welcome to join us. Considering it was only a high of 68F, we might just have to get back into the Uintas this weekend again.....of course I never know where I am fishing until the moment I get the lines wet though. Or is it easy to get lost?[/quote] For the most part....finding your way is easy. There is a river crossing that you have to do that is marked with a sign........on the other side of the river. The only other section that can get confusing is coming back from Fish Lake to Sand Lake. There are several trails that come out from the lake, then peter out into nothing! We walked through an old campsite on Round Lake and found a large piece of sausage just lying out on the ground near the tent area. Its certainly not..... This could be false just thought I would let ya know what the book said. We were up at Fish Lake last weekend with a group of Scouts. We camped Thursday and Friday nights, and hiked out Saturday. A pair of sunglasses was found sitting on the hood of my truck, and one of the Scouts, thinking they belonged to one of us, set them inside my truck. Thought that they might have been left by occupants of a white Ford truck that was parked next to me when we returned to the trailhead. I knew it was a long shot. The trailhead was packed on Saturday afternoon. One of our group had his GPS for the hike. It was just under 4.5 miles from the trailhead to Fish Lake and an elevation gain of 2,500 feet. The hike was about 5 hours up and 3 hours down for Scouts with packs. Certainly brings back some memories from a few years ago. I remember it being a pretty steep challenging trek when I was 30, so I'm sure now that I'm 20+ that, it would seem even more so. Did you by chance try the stream that flows out of Fish Lake? I've always done well on small colorful Brookies down that hilly stretch of water. Your post has given me the itch to hit my favorite Grayling Lake in the Mirror Lake Area here real soon. Thanks for sharing. [signature]
