Tiger trout in Hobble Creek - SkinnyLynnie - 09-16-2013
I fished Hobble Creek Saturday morning, and I caught a bunch of small brown trout, which was what I expected. However, among them was a larger trout with different markings--a TIGER trout. It was about 12 inches long. (See photo)
I didn't know that there were tiger trout in Hobble Creek. Is this a new plan by the DWR, or has some bucket biologist been at work?

It's not listed on the stocking list for this year or the last few for Tibble or SLF.
Pretty unique catch there!

Pretty fish. If you have brookies in the creek too, it might be a natural tiger. They do show up occasionally where brook trout and browns both spawn.

That sure is a great looking tiger at that. Never do get sick of how pretty they look.
I have no clue about the stocking but if you really want to know just contact the DNR via email. I am sure they would answer your question.
I would not fret about bucket biology with Tigers. Yes disease is an issue but they are sterile after all. In no way am I approving of bucket biology, just sayin your creek isn't gonna become infested with tiger trout.

I learned to fly fish on Hobble Creek and know it well. There are indeed brook trout (and lots of them) when you get high up in the canyon. I was thinking the same thing. Or it could have gotten mixed in with some rainbows that were planted. That is certainly a possibility as well.

I caught this little tiger by Kelly's Grove, near the mouth of the canyon. Could it have been hatched high up in the canyon and migrated downstream?

I suppose it's possible. I used to catch a ton of brook trout up in Wardsworth Canyon, but that's clear up at the top of the canyon. It may be more plausible that it was mixed in with some rainbows that they planted lower in the canyon. Either way, it's still a cool catch.

They mostly plant Rainbows now, and only once this spring that I know of. And their plantings are usually quite a ways downstream of Kelly's Grove. I've caught Brookies less than 2 miles above Kelly's.
