Great day in the marsh.. and Duck ID? - bowhunter3 - 11-23-2013 Took off work at lunch time yesterday, since the low cloud cover and strong north winds were driving me nuts. I knew the ducks would be flying, and they were. There was a lot more action than I normally get down here in Utah County, at least until late season. There were mallards galore. I shot a couple green heads, then decided I was going to try for my first ever full green head limit. I passed on a ton of shovelers, a few gadwall, some GWT, and all hens. Finally, had 6 drakes, when I get two teal committed into the decoys. WHAT?!?! Blue, not green. So, I dropped one. So, I now had my limit, still ducks everywhere and a good half hour left until sunset. It was a great hunt, at least where I hunt. Now, to the ID question. I know everyone says 90%+ of teal people think are blue wing are just cinnamons. I have never shot either, so I am no expert on the matter. I don't have great pics, but can anyone tell for sure which it is. Obviously not a drake of either I would say, but they both were the same (hens?). I am no expert though either. [signature] Re: [bowhunter3] Great day in the marsh.. and Duck ID? - pookiebar - 11-23-2013 I am thinking it is a cinnamon by virtue of the fact it is still here. The hens of the two species are almost impossible to tell apart. But blue winged teal are really early migrators, while cinnamons have a resident population in this area. Hense the warning on not to eat the cinnamon teal because of heavy metal toxins in the meat.
