Mantua perch question, last minute decision - Iceman88 - 12-23-2013 Decided about 5 mins ago that I'm going to head out in the morning and haven't had any luck on perch this last week. Just curious what lures, colors are working for others, are you using a flasher( silver cast master) or just the lure of choice, I would love any last second advise or I'm just gonna wing it and hope for the best. I used several different lures but all of them needed to be tipped with a waxie in order to get any attention. Color wasn't even a factor. The fish were very active and would hit anything. In my opinion, presentation is more important than type or color of lure right now. You must fish the very bottom of the reservoir for the Perch. Most of the Gills were also concentrated on the bottom. Find water that is over 10' deep for Perch at Mantua. A little light jigging was very effective when the action started to slow down at mid day. For bait, I used Gulp Alive 1" minnows on one hook and on the smaller jig a Gulp Maggot plus a waxie. If they took the waxie, the maggot still had some flavor/scent to entice a second helping. Drop-shot rigging was the key to detecting "lift" bites on the upper jig. I tried a dropper for the upper, but they could lift that one and clean it without moving the line or my indicator. As mentioned, I got perch and 'gills in water nine feet and deeper, trout shallower. And many trout were cruising suspended three feet under the ice, btw. [signature] |
