Winter Catfishing? - boredfishing - 01-04-2014

Anyone ever fish for catfish in the winter? Whether through the ice or at the river? Tips? Tactics?

Though I've put bait in front of them many times through the ice, I've never been able to get them to bite. Good luck with that!

Your going to need to find a spot with little or no current. On a warm day and the weather is on the up swing you will be able to find them in shallow getting warm and looking for food. They will want a smaller portion and keep it still cut bait is the best option. I have caught them in water temps in the 40's. I haven't tried colder. Ron

Sounds like some people were catching a couple through the ice at Lowell. I think I was reading it on that other fishing forum.

people have caught a few at lake lowell but i think it is pretty tough i tried a piece of trout cut bait the other day out their and didn't get a thing next time i am going to try chicken liver i was rite on bottom using a 2/0 circle hook and a small split shot but if i remember rite people that caught them last year were just dead sticking jigs tipped with worms like u would use for perch

I think they just gotta be finessed because they like it warm

That's some good solid advice. I was not sure whether to try through the ice or just head to the river. Either way, I gotta bundle up.

Here is a quick map. It's over by Nampa/Caldwell. I've also marked the 2 dams, you have to ice fish within 200 yards of the dams when ice fishing.

Interesting, I guess I need to read up on the regs there.. How big do the catfish get there? Pretty regular 2 - 3 lbs?

My best luck has been with a small piece of shrimp covered in garlic and fish oil and then I let it go a week or so in a ziplock in a small Tupperware at room temperature. That smell will curl your toenails but the cats seem to enjoy it. You're also gonna need to get it right on top of them. all fish eat during winter, the warm water fish just get less active...

Minus letting it sit out to get gross.. that sounded like a good dinner for tonight.

I agree on the "more areas" thing. Stopped by tonight on the Caldwell side and walked out a fair way, when I punched through the ice the FF only read 9 feet. My wife was in the car so I didn't walk out more to try to find the depth. Must be quite a hike away from the dam to get to 20 and 30 feet.

What is the reason behind the limits to the lake like that? Is there a marker out there to tell me how far not to go? I've never really heard of this before.
