Mantua Ice??? - trfishin - 01-04-2014
Hey Im thinking about going down to mantua to do some ice fishing maybe tomorrow or Monday.
I was wondering if anyone can tell me how the ice and the edges of the ice are? Its been a looong time since I ice fished mantua and the last couple times I ice fished it years ago you had to have a board to get on and off the ice or it was a big jump to get on the ice without getting we feet.
Im hoping to go down and get my son on the ice and catch some fish and have another good day on the ice Thanks and good luck fishing[fishin]

The ice was getting close to a foot thick, most edges are fine. The main spot where everyone gets on at the south end looked like someone put a foot through there but if you go east a little further there is a really nice spot to get on and off. Fishing really slowed down for me on Mantua in fact I got skunked last trip. I graphed lots of fish, but couldn't figure out what they wanted. I could watch them on my graph come up to my lures then take off without a nibble. Good luck and hope you have fun. Hyrum seems to be fishing a little better but the fish are small. Hey thanks alot for the ice and fishing update. you never know how the fishing is going to be with the storms rolling threw might have had something to do with the slower fishing. good luck on your next trip out and i will let you know how it was for us when we get back
thanks for the info on hyrum its been some years back we caught some nice perch out of hyrum but haven't been back since the perch of any size disappeared for us thanks again good luck fishing

I went on Wednesday with a couple of friends and we all limited out in about 3 hours. I went again yesterday and the 3 of us only caught 4 in 3 hours of cold miserable torture. I hope it picks back up.

Part of me thinks the pressure caught all the fish but at the same time I'm still graphing lots of fish so I know they aren't all caught, but it sure got a lot harder for me to catch fish lately. I agree with you and hope for an improvement. Later J

There was still a ton of fish we watched swim by our bait on my aqua vu. We ended up catching about 15 perch in 4 hours but 95% of the fish could care less what we put infront of them.

Educated for sure. Fish are always hungry but if a jig causes pain they'll remember that for a good amount of time. Especially lmb. Once released it will be months if not years before they will bite something similar again. Some will never bite a lure ever again. Perch and bluegill are dumber but not too much dumber. lol Even the stupidest fish learns eventually lol. There's a ton of catch and release pressure unfortunately these days. Some people hook as many as they can for hours at a time they don't stop at 50 perch or 4 for trout, they keep educating and educating. Then they wonder why fish don't bite anymore lol. It would be great if there were limits set on catch and release. Same limits as for keeping fish but of course it would be impossible to enforce lol.

Now be careful there you're trying to cut into my fun wanting to limit C&R. If I only could catch a limit worth there would be a lot of short trips on the good days. At least on the trout side of things. I guess it takes longer on the perch and gill side but I'm guilty of educating some of those finicky critters and hope to continue to do so. However, I did try some perch and walleye the other day and I may have to agree they are pretty tasty. Catch ya later J

Its probably both because we had some fish not even come up to check out the jig. But then we had some come up to it and just look at it for sometimes minutes. The ones we did catch came in like they were mad at something. And those fish ended up on the ice so they wont be educated anymore fish fry.[

I don't mean to derail the thread, but I have to disagree with Fin-s-Fish's personal theory. I've caught plenty of fish, including LMB, with hook holes in their mouths - even a few fish with hooks still in them. And one LMB with an almost-new crankbait hanging from its lip.
It's a bit ridiculous to suggest that fish don't hit lures again for months or years. To say that, you imply that they know they're hitting a lure, but hit it anyway.
