Goig to Chicago, any sugestions? - Tuna-Hooker - 04-08-2014

Headed to Chicago the last of April/First of May, and I will have some down time in the afternoons. Any suggestions on places to fish or things to do?

Take a gun[Tongue]

But seriously, there have got to be some Lake Michigan guides there, correct? I know there are fish in the Chicago River….I watched Mike Iconelli catch some.

Are you going to be downtown area? If so hit the John Hancock or Sears (Willis) Tower for the view. Don't hit Rush street too early. Lincoln Park is worth a visit. Beware if winds blow off the lake it can snow along the Lake Front until early June even if it's nice less than a mile away. I'm not sure is there's any salmon fishing then but worth looking into.

My sincerest condolences. Chicago is my second favorite place -- after anywhere else in the universe.

The Museum of Science and Industry is the only decent thing in that city. Go there first and you may find yourself going back on subsequent days. Just too much in there to see and do.

I like the idea of the Museum of Science and Industry, I will look into this more.
And as far as taking a gun you maybe right.........I have been told that we will be out of the shop at 5pm and not to wait around as it is in a rough part of town.
I will be satying in Schereville Indiana just across the border, and commuting to Chicago daily.

Just an FYI - Carrying a gun is illegal in Chicago [pirate]

Spelling "g u n" is illegal in Chicago.

One thing I would NOT do would be to visit a gun shop in Indiana and then make that daily commute into Chicago. You're almost a cinch to be the center of attraction for Chicago undercover cops for gun running.

Tell that to the 500 killed last year…I would take my chances.

find Gino's pizza. There is an east and west. Order the deep dish meaty legend, you will have dinner for two days!

Reconsider….don't go!

Or, IF you absolutely have to, hit Wrigley Field and watch the cubs play.

Hang a left and head North into Wis. Fishing should be turning on about now in some of the rivers for walleye and sauger, I would think the West shore up toward Milwaukee and Green Bay should be prime for the lakers and big browns. Have fun on your trip.

I will have to take a look into Gino's pizza, as I do love a good pizza.

This is a work trip so no guns invloved, atleast not on my end.......A bullet proof vest on the other hand.......

I wish I wasn't going myself, but I will do my best to make the most of the situation and try to enjoy something new.

If I had more time I would love to go farther north in search of toothy critters but I will pretty limited to the Chigaco area.

It's about an hour and a half north of Chicago, Milwaukee harbor has some of the best close to shore brown trout fishing in the country ! The world record was caught in Racine,WI. There are lots of great guides in that area . Museums are boring.... Go catch some fish !!

Wow you are not kidding about the size of those brown trout out of Milwaukee Harbor!!!! I have sent out emails to a couple of guides to see if the fishing will still be good at the end of April.

Pizzeria Uno's is the original stuffed pizza. My favorite is Edwardo's. It's all good but if you have it for lunch forget about eating dinner. All those stuffed pizzas must be a thousand calories a slice.

They are right about it being the rough part of town. The area from the south side of Chicago over to and including gary Indiana Is not a place to go wandering at night (your right in the middle of that area) That being said, If you have some time, you are not far from south bend, pretty cool if your a sports fan, the college football hall of fame is there, Real nice area. For an evening out Drive to one of the el train stations . they all go down town and circle an eight block area. Pretty safe , and a few things to do and see. The old pumphouse is pretty cool.( the only building to survive the Chicago fire)

I am headed to the same general area at the same time, and about the only ones who think Chicago is a nice place are those that have not been anywhere else.

for pizza I recommend Giordano's, they have a place right next to Midway, and IMHO is better than Gino's

being a recent transplant from Chicago I thought id chime in . dont worry i wont be defending its well earned reputation! some good pizza recommendations have been thrown around Giordano's and Lou Malnottis are both amazing ! you want a real Chicago Beef sandwich hit up Portillos , there are numerous locations in the area.

as far as fishing goes I would contact Capt. Ralph Steiger - he is much closer to the area you will be staying at , works out of of many Indiana harbors up to Navy Pier and his reputation as a top guide on Lake Michigan is well earned - he will put you on any number of different species from Smallmouths to King Salmon
