Fishing the Bay with Gumbyk 05-19-14 - wiperhunter2 - 05-20-2014

Hit Willard yesterday with Gumbyk, we did not get to South marina until 10:30 am and by then most of the morning breeze had died down. We headed to the West dike and started using bottom bouncers and KCT worm harnesses for walleye. This was Gumbyk's first try at bottom bouncing so he watched as I got everything set up. I put the electric trolling motor down and started moving at a slow speed, got the first rod set up and in the holder, started setting up the second rod and Bam, fish on[crazy]. It turned out to be a pesty wiper about 14", turned him loose to grow up a little. Got the rest of the rods set up and started explaining to Gumbyk the fine art of bottom bouncing, how to sweep the rod and setting the hook. I got up in the bow of the boat and we started catching fish. Just the average walleye 14 to 20 inchers with the occasional wiper. After we had caught 4 or 5 eyes and a few wipers another boat came along side my boat and Coyotehunter introduced himself. As always it was good to meet another BFT member. We continued to work the area until we picked up 6 eyes, then I decided to switch over to some fast trolling and started putting the cranks on the rods and got the gas kicker up and running. We were bottom bouncing at 1 to 1.2 mph but when the kicker started pushing the boat a little faster I still had one bouncing rod out, I grabbed the rod to reel it in and wham I had our last eye for the day. We trolled toward the South marina, picking up our last fish of the day a fat 17" wiper. Lots of folks fishing on the boat docks, I tried to tell them they were not allowed to fish there but they just laughed at me and kept on fishing.[mad] Wish the Parks guys would get those new fisherman docks in but I doubt it would make a lot of difference. Sorry, no pics, I've got a new computer and haven't been able to download any pics since I got it.
Enjoyed fishing with you Gumbyk, hope we get a chance to fish together again.

Lol, just realized you posted this after I just posted. Anyhow, it was great to fish and learn from you.
Had a good time and hopefully we get to do it again sometime soon.
Thanks again!

Man, seems like you guys had a pretty good day! It is alway good to see people sharing practices and having a good time doing it.

I need to get some more practice with bottom bouncing, its still something I struggle with. I would probably have more practice but my wife keeps giving me a moving target, changing what lake and species we are targeting.

Thanks for the post though, it was a fun read.
