New Creek Fishing Flyrod - nancyboy - 07-08-2014

I have been fishing a creek by my house for years. I have been useing spinning rods, even cast nets to take fish. The creek is about 2 feet deeb at its deapest and is about 10 yards wide at its widest. The current is generally slow with some small ridles occaionally. There are largemouth and spotted bass, bluegill, redbreast, and bullhead. I will mostly be using dry flies, but I will probably use nymphs and streamers as well. I have caught foot long bass in here before. So.... what wt. fly rod should I get I was leaning towards a 3 but Im not sure.

A 3wt could be a lot of fun. Maybe a 6'er?

[#008000]Forgot to ask if this will be the only rod that you will be getting, and if so do you plan on only fly fishing subject creek?[/#008000]

[#008000]A 3wt would be good. Personally I would be inclined to go with a 2wt and a reel loaded with a 3wt line. Any time that I'm on a small stream I will pull out my 2wt. Lots of fun on latching onto some native trout.[/#008000]

I got to ask why you feel the need to go with a 3wt on a 2wt rod? Modern rods and line are rated pretty true, unless you are using a very fast rod and you wish to slow it down. In that case I say look for a different 2 wt.[Wink]

[#008000]Actually I misspoke. Several years ago I wanted a 7' 2wt rod to fish tight streams. I have a 3wt with an Orvis Mid Arbor II loaded with W/F 3wt line. At that time I wasn't up to spending a few hundred bucks for another reel & line. So I placed my MAII on my 7' rod and it worked quite well. I should point out that most of the line will never see the light of day as I do a lot of roll casting and flicking. At this place and time I see no need to buy any more equipment. BTW my rod is a Thomas & Thomas LPS 702 . [/#008000]

That is a nice rod. I have a 7'9" Sage LL 2wt. Love it! I am using Orvis Superfine WF2F on it.
