Newton Res...???? - SkunkedAgain - 01-07-2015

Okay I know you're probably wanting to keep a lid on it, but is anyone fishing Newton and if so how is the bite? Any size to the perch and crappie this winter? How thick is the ice?? Thanks J

Are you sure there is any water in Newton?

About as low as can be, but should be a puddle still. Of course it's also a longer hike in/out for the sake of it!

Haven't been by myself, but I've heard from some scouts- earlier.

I'll bet with all this thaw, it might be filling up some! (not good for edges there)

Re: [albinotrout] Newton Res...???? - SkunkedAgain - 01-08-2015

I don't think it could be lower than last year so I expect it will be a similar year to last. But I haven't been over for months. Hope someone will spill the beans. If Hyrum stays frozen it won't matter but sometimes Newton gets more ice than the bigger ponds.

Oh don't know if this is a good spot for news buried deep in a sub post but Cutler has been refilled and is up to regular levels but the ice will be way bad since the fill came after the freezing ended. Later J

I'd like to try too Newton. I'm always interested in pulling a tiger through the ice if any are there.

Ha! There may be a couple dozen left, who knows.

That fishery has sure went in the tank.

I'm not sure my 10" hole would be big enough for the tiger to fit through. J

Sometimes the perch at Newton are fair sized but it mostly just another place to try if Hyrum is too thin of ice. Later J

Yup I think a tiger would be a blast through a hole. Later J

man when i was a kid i remember my dad took me out there and I caught some monster blue gill. Now, like has been mentioned its mostly dinks but fun to get away from crowds and catch a lot of fish. My real reason is to hopefully hook into a tiger through the ice. I do know there are some quality bass but with the low water levels that could be history too.

I drove out that direction yesterday to see what Newton was about since I'd never been there before. I just moved up into the Cache Valley area. Anyway, the place appears to be less than half full of water with some ice on there. I was too chicken to venture out onto the "ice" but I could see where someone had drilled a few holes near the dam.
Water was coming up around the edges on top of what ice there is. Since there is no snow and the water level is so low, it would be a chore to drag a sled down there anyway. I didn't see any other people out on that ice at all.

Hey thanks for checking that out and reporting... it is a big hike down to the water level, but it's sometimes a nice change of pace... No trout so you have to rely on warm water skills to pick up bass, crappie and perch with a possible tiger showing up... If you go to try it sometime, I like to get on the pond on the west side of the dam there is a mellow slope that's great for sleigh riding and taking fishing sleds onto the ice... I've been known to let the kids sleigh ride while I fished... Anyway thanks again for the info... J

It's not the hike down, but the hike back up that gets me. Hope it gets a chance to fill up this year.

Re: [CoyoteSpinner] Newton Res...???? - SkunkedAgain - 01-11-2015

I agree with Ya there. That north west bay is a lot less steep so I like that spot for in and out. It's longer but still doesn't seem near as bad. I'm hoping for more water as well that pond really needs it. Later J

Most of the ponds in this state really need it.[:/] Lets hope we get something from this next storm coming in.
