GLoomis rod - nymphfish - 06-11-2015

Ok question. I broke my GLoomis IMX fly rod in island park and i called the warranty dept to see if they would assist me. They said the rod is 20yrs old and they will only replace it with a GLoomis pro4X rod. My question is how good of a rod it this ? Should i sell it and look for a IMX? I am really liking my IMX and sure hate to settle for a lesser rod any suggestions

From what I understand the pro4x is basically the IMX of today. You have to remember that rod building processes have changed over the past 20 years. I have grabbed what is considered a "mediocre" rod by todays standards and they are still as good as or better than the top rated rods from 20 years ago.

That all being said I will buy the pro4x off you for $100?? [Wink]

I will see I hope it's as good as my IMX that has been a phenomenal rod how I feel when Gary Loomis made this 20 years ago it was made good it has lasted this long I'm not sure if today's rods would last that long.

Nymphfish....I understand your pain. My favorite flyrod is a 20+ year old Loomis GL4...a 5 wt. It has caught trout with the tiniest flies and mastered a 40 lbs king in Alaska. I bought a Loomis 7 wt about 10 years ago and have been woefully disappointed with it. The first time I used it it folded over in the the butt section like a green stick on a 16 inch rainbow. A few years ago I called Loomis service dept and they were decidedly not very friendly. They explained they don't make blanks available anymore as I build all my rods. My experience since Loomis sold the company to Shimano has been a downward trend on quality and service. You couldn't get me to own another Loomis....unless it was pre Shimano.
