Uinta Hiking Trip - Uintaman - 07-10-2015

I and Buddy, his wife and two dogs, had a great time in the Uintas. We started at the Hades Trailhead, and went to Fern Lake, Also fished Lodgepole and Granddaddy on the way back. Really wonderful country. Fish was pretty awesome at Lodgepole on a 5 of diamonds lure, a jig work as well for my buddy.

Great place to go. Whenever I suggest a backpacking trip I get strange looks from the fam.[:/] Thanks for the report.

Thanks for the report and photos.

My wife and I use to take a ten day backpack trip into a different drainage each summer when we were young. That was a very long time ago.[Wink]

Your report brought back some fond memories of how wonderful the Uintas really are.

Is that a cast iron griddle in one of those pics? Backpacking with that is dedication. Foil is about as heavy as I want to go to cook fish.

And for the PSA take your foil home with you, along with anything else you take into the mountains.

Very nice. I've been to the Granddaddy chain a couple of times, and those are fond memories.

Very astute, the cast aluminum griddle, I think weighs 5 lbs, makes a great breakfast, pancakes, eggs, BUT you really need a group of 4 or better to justify it in my opinion. My buddy carried it, I am more a foil guy too.
We did break up the fire place, scavenged all non burnables, spread ashes, dispersed all rocks, left zero trace. Camped a 1/4 mile from Fern. My packed weighed 40 lbs without water or fuel, 48 with fluids. Too much, used to be about 55 lbs. Coming out it was 40.

My buddy gave up his tent, and brought only the fly and poles, but packed in griddle. Had to wear mosquito netting to bed. We did eat good, especially bookies.

Nice report and pictures. The Grandaddy Basin is always a favorite.

I used to be one of those guys that took a cast iron frying pan (and about 65 or 70 pounds of other . . . stuff) on my pack trips. No more. I shoot for 25-30 lbs. now, and I enjoy the hikes much more.

If I had a pack horse then yes I would take a Dutch oven with me. Since I am the pack horse, I need to keep it light my self. Looking at new ways of doing things. Or old ways as I remember them from scouts so long ago.[cool]

I have abandoned the tent in recent years, and gone with a hammock and a tarp. No more sleeping on hard ground, uneven surfaces etc. My back feels good every time I wake up. Last year it weathered a wicked storm in the Big Horn Crags of Idaho. It was the first real test, and it came out with flying colors. meanwhile those in tents all got some sort of water in their tents.

And in all it cost around 20-30 dollars for the entire set up. total weight is 2-3 lbs which includes a bug net.

I had a similar experience once. I slept under a piece of vesquine and those in the tent got we while I stayed dry.
